Question has justy come up in the office, whats the 'correct' method to heat wrap an exhaust, there's talk of jubilee clips and the like. What methods have you peeps used, and have you found it to be of benefit? Best make of wrap to use?

Best way would be with the manifold off as it is a bitch to wrap. I managed to do mine whilst on the car but it took ages to get right and it’s not 100% neat. Squids one looks the tits as it was wrapped off the car. I used the metal tie wraps but I think jub clips are better if you can get them to fit. I used DEI brand with turbo wrap too.

Tis is picky:

Cheers, his car is a 55-plate Impreza but I guess the theory's all the same. Is the heat wrap actually bonded on or just wrapped around tightly and held at each end but with clips of some kind. I also imagine you'd need to be careful how tightly the clips were tightened too, with the expansion and contraction of the manifold with heat. We suffer from cracked manifolds enough already!

Wet the wrap first as it helps to get it on there nice and tight. If it's a manifold, you need to be particularly careful that you get it all evenly covered and avoid gaps so there's no hotspots.

Also the heat wrap should be put in to water and applied while its still wet, when ready let it dry and paint it with High temperature manifold paint so that with time and high temperatures the wrap doesn't hardens and gets too fragile...

Well...I just bought a load of wrap, and spent about three hours under the car on my back feeding it round the mid section and the downpipe. The downpipe is a right Bi*ch to do on the car...

I just overlapped the edges and made sure that the wrap was pulled tight, using metal cable ties every now and again to keep it all secure, and for starting and finishing the wrap.

I opted not to wrap the manifold as I'd heard a lot of stories about manifolds cracking afterwards... \:\)
