Hi, the speakers have suddenly stopped working in my coop, they come back on intermittently for a short while then totally go off again??? They are standard speakers with a kenwood head unit, have worked fine since i bought the car but all of a sudden, nothing crazy, has a wire come loose or do you think there is a loose connection somewhere as it is worse when i go over a bump? Any help would be REALLY appreciated, cheers, tom.

Your CD's not finished has it tongue

Is it just the speakers or is it a lack of communication between CD plyer and head unit. Does it do it with MP3 or radio??

Reason I ask is my CD changer is in the boot and that developed a poor connection. Used to lose communication for no reason but particularly after bumps or speed ramps grr Firmly stuck in place with some metal repair putty now and that seems to have fixed it smile

LOL, nope, if only that was the case smile! It has this problem on radio and cd, its totally silent but now and then the sound comes back again but then goes after a short while back to silence, its really odd smile all i can hear is crackling sound when its silent?? Do you think its the speaker connection or wiring, if so where is all this located and how can i go about fixing this? Cheers in advance, tommy coop

your prob sounds similar to a speaker shorting out [speaker wire/connection grounded to earth] which effectively wipes out the output chip in your head unit causing 1 or all speaker to clip and go off, BUT with out having a look and testing its impossible to truly diagnose, it could be 1 or more of at least 10 problems including the head unit being at fault, you could how ever start at each speaker and check all connections back to the head unit, hope this helps, good luck.

Unfortunately he's right, and only checking the connections will work...

Check the headunit is connected correctly, then check each speaker in turn, start with the fronts as sometimes is the electric window that may catch the wire...

Visually check the speaker connections then also try the stereo with the speaker disconnected and see if it the speaker/speaker terminals at faultalso try moving the speaker wire in case it has a cut which is grounding to earth on the bodywork...

speaker connections would be behind the speakers, and the head unit.shame your so far i would have done it for you, with no disrespect intended what so ever,i would recomend you taking your car to an audio installer and have it checked out [and i dont mean halfords]as you might struggle slightley, and the cost should be no more than £15 and max 20mins. hope this helps.

Unscrew the speakers and check the connections to the speakers, sometimes the terminals break, or as I said sometimes the windows can foul the wire if it has come lose...

Also with headunit on, disconnecting the speakers individually can isolate the problem... From memory the connections are housed in plastic blocks so there will be no issue with terminals touching (unless the speakers are aftermarket and therefore the connections changed?)

If things like the rear quarter panels are off, at least if you take it to a car audio shop it will cut down on the labour

I will unscrew the speakers tonight if i get time and check the connections, if they appear to be ok, could it be the head unit as its an OLD kenwood cd player? The sound does come back for about 10 or 15 mins then disappears for hours or if i go over a bump?

Sounds like a loose connection mate, if it's the headunit, it may be the actual connection to the headunit itself the power or speaker harness/es that attach to the iso block...

Let us know what happens fella...

I have progress! Popped into hellfrauds where my mate has recently become duty manager (top lad), he took the head unit out, loose connections at back, i have sound from cd player but the radio wont work now lol, oh well at least i know its not anything up with the speakers or head unit just the connection. Will take it to audio specialists to get the radio bit working if it bugs me enough, nice to have sound back though smile cheers for your help

haha, i know! To be fair, he did it free of charge as he knows me and apart from the radio not working, hes saved me a few bob or two getting it diagnosed etc.

The radio may not be working if there is no power to the ariel amplifier. This is the ariel power lead in the din block and can come loose.
