Hello All,
I sort of started a thread inside another one of my threads recently about how I have never seen a set of aftermarket wheels that suit the coupe as well as the originals. I wondered what other peoples opinions are and thought people could post pictures of any contenders.
I apologise if there has been a similar thread on this before, but with new wheels coming out all the time and more and more modded coupe's appearing, I thought it wouldn't hurt to get people thinking about this subject again.
In my opinion if they bought out an 18inch version of the classic 20VT wheel, it would sell on this forum like hot cakes. Anyone agree?

I love the standard wheels , especially in LE anthracite, I wouldn't consider any other wheels, however, if someone released standard wheels, in 17in guise, I would be very, very tempted, 18's would look too big IMO, I like the fact that the front wheels are 'full' with brake disc and caliper ......

Agreed - 18's look too big and dwarf the standard brakes. They are also crashy, and are hard to fit without fouling the arches.

The standard 20VT wheels are lovely and have always suited the car best IMO and I have a set on my 20v NA. I agree, I haven't seen any aftermarket wheels that suit the car as well. A 17" version of the 20VT wheel would be perfect.

I love standard 20vt wheels in black or dark grey. Makes the car look mean, especially when lowered.

i have the same dilema. i have a very nice set of 18's that i bought for a different car but now i have the choice of either putting these wheels on which will make the car look amazing but suffer the crashy ride and tyre costs and also buy spacers and wobble blts. or buy a second set of 20vt refurb them mysel in graffite grey and have one set with goodyear f1's of the winter and one set with toyo r888's on for the dry summer use. what do you guys think? speed red coop by the way

Absolutely agree.
The original wheels are the best, especially the LE ones.
Anyone know what is the feasibility of having a workshop make up 17 version of the original wheels?

out of interest though how heavey are the standard wheels and i take it by going to a 7.5" with 18" wheel i should have better road holding over the 16's and the ballon tyres that go with it?

I used to have a bit of a peugeot fettish and had a 205 gti and a 306 xsi. On the 205gti drivers forum they organised a group buy and had 17inch versions of the GTI6 wheel made up by a company in France I think it was. Cant remember how much it cost everyone, but they had to get something like 200 people on the list before the company would do anything about it. I certainly wouldn't want to have to organise all that, but if someone did I dont think they would have a problem getting a long list of interested parties.

Well depends, the more you have the more the cost comes down. But I don't think we would need too many. I would have 5/6 alloyes allowing for spares etc. Might be worth an investigation

Agree with the exception of the 16v wheels which are imo, horrible! These are much better

Those wheels do look nice......probably the best suited non standard wheels I've seen for a while.
Definitely agree on the 16V wheels. They dont do the car any justice at all

Blimey, you've got the handbrake sorted on the Portofino! Mine wouldn't hold on that slope

I like the 16VT wheels, but they need to be painted darker to look good. Didcoops old 16VT was testimony to this fact! Lovely looking car.

But I don't think we would need too many. I would have 5/6 alloyes allowing for spares etc. Might be worth an investigation Ok I've been in contact with a company. We would never get anywhere even close to 4000 wheels, but we might aswell see what options/prices we can come up with although I would be suprised if a Group Buy ever came of it. But would be great if it did. If anybody has any pictures of the alloys that would be great, as I don't really fancy taking my wheels off. Hi Mark. The 20 V Turbo is what we affectionately call a ‘P.I.T.A’ I’m sure you can work out what those letters stand for We have looked at quite a few options to work with this car and not all have been satisfactory. Some owners try wheel spacers, often with PCD variation bolts (not so many 4x98 wheels available) and we don’t really deem this as being safe, especially with a high number of owners wanting to do track days etc. Also, I haven’t been able to find a decent supply of commercially available aftermarket wheels – certainly things from the Team Dynamics or Compomotive ranges fit but not everyone likes the designs As the standard wheel is a 16” single piece design it would take quite a bit of money to make the tooling and moulds necessary to do a production run of 17” Off the top of my head it would probably take an order of around 4000 pcs to make it viable. What I can try and do is, if you email me some decent pictures of the wheel, email this out to some manufacturers and see if we can get any feedback. Worst case scenario is looking at a 3 piece custom design, maybe with a billet centre but this will have to have an outer lip so the wheel wouldn’t match 100% Email me some pics and we can look further into this. Regards William Murphy

Does that mean you would need to get 1000 people to order a set of 4 or 4000 customers wanting a set each. If they want 4000 sets ordered and you take a rough cost of £800 per set, thats £3.2m to tool and design moulds....unless my maths is failing me.
Even if the only want 1000 buyers thats still £800,000 revenue to make the investment worthwhile.
I know nothing about wheel manufacturing and what goes into it, but that does seem a little steep.

my thoughts too, but we'll see what they come back with anyway. may not be a 1 piece design but see what they can do.
also gives me something to go off to see what other companies can do.

JohnS had a set of 18's on his - Azev (no idea of the version) and the porsche brake conversion and it just looked superb. Looked original on the car and just gave it a more finished feel.
I think the standard wheels only being 16's do let the car down a little. But I've had them as standard for 10 years I like the originals - but I did think JohnS was the best after market ones I have seen.
