i am looking at putting in a double din head unit thats also got sat nav and touch screen and also putting in a 250gb external hard drive for my music. has anyone got pics of a double din installed as i was going to take out the ashtray and mould a double din cage in there and fit the hard drive in the glove box. what do you goys think? just found one with sat nav for £100 but i could always buy a sat nav drive for it?

Obviously will wreck the console, not sure if any of the double dins have a face off...security issues maybe. But on the positive the sat nav would be nice to have, not sure if you really need a hard drive capable of storing 5000 albums though mate? Suppose you could get a HU that can play movies.

yeah the one i am looking at has a sd drive and usb so i could put what ever songs i wanted on there. i would just get a nice large extrenal hard drive and then update it each months all my songs are on there.
as with the console i don't like the rubber finish and mine is in need of a paint and i have a restructre idea for the console anyway with new buttons and heater controls and everything to make it look plsh and this would just finish it off. any major problems i might face removing the ashtray and remoulding the console?

Agree with shifty and the butchering of the console. You can get motorised screen units which do the same job, but only take up the space of a normal HU.

double din do look very nice at the bottom of the console, but as said it will need to be butchered (it has been done if you do a search)
Motorized screens will foul the gear stick in anything other than 2nd, 4th, or reverse so you need to be carefull.

i don't really want a motorized one as i want a factory look and i think the double din looks much nicer. i am not to botheres if i have to fill and paint or even adapt the console as i want to anyway as the o.e one is pants and nice is a little broken and needs a apint anyway.

Will you be relocating the double din? I rekon it may be too low for sat nav uses, whilst driving.

it will angle up to the driver. i don't it high up as i am going to covert the middle air vents to a tripple gauge bank and i wan the clock and buttons to stay where they are as i have plans for them.

Sounds interesting and the console is not the most intricate design I've ever seen. What are you going to make the new one out of?

I though about fitting a double din myself. I'm not sure it can be done because the ash tray isn't very deep. You might not have space to recess the unit all the way.

whats behind it though as im handy with a angle grinder not a lot. Just a piece of bent metal used to support the handbrake cover console. Which i never screwed back on anyway. And yes there is lots of space. I have ALL the wires for my in car PC in that location including the stereo! Its also very easy to work with as you can access the back of this from the passenger and drivers footwell

ill be hacking up a dash at some point as well. I have a car PC put together on my sofa at the moment, just waiting on a DC psu and some bits and bobs
its old hardware, p3 1ghz on board sound, on board VGA with wireless LAN and a BT dongle. my phone passes its audio over the BT bridge and the BT dongle also works with the BT satnav.
I haven't worked out the power requirements yet but the most expensive part is going to be the IDE to flash adapter with the 2* 16gb compact flash cards (spinning HDDs take to much power and probably will not respond well to the shock that gets transfered though the fixing points to the case)

where are you putting the PC unit?
One of the main problems i had was that most things power of USB however they don't make a 12v USB HUB, which is frustrating.
at the moment i either have BT or GPS but not both until i resolve the issue.
I'm not wanting to put a 240 volt power brick converter in my car to change 12v to 240v to then have the hub change it all back to 5v!
I've seen some people use the 5v feed from the PSU to power additional usb items, however i've not had a go yet.
keep us informed.

im not sure where im going to put the unit yet, Some where behind the dash would be logical for cable runs. I would also have the mount the amp at the front somewhere
the board Im using has 4 usb slots, If I have a need ill just add another USB card that can draw its power from the main bus
the PSU's i have been looking at have the adapter for ATX and two molex connections, fans can be powered off the board
im interested in your BT issue?
