Shots dont do justice, stripped head out to change gasket. So decided to do a little spring cleaning. Plenum powder coated along with fuel rail and rocker cover. Intake manifold and throttle body treated to halfords high temp matt paint(500deg C)

nismo, is that old style number plate legal!!

yes officer its legal i'v had black plates on my coupe for almost 2 years now and had them on my skyline before the coupe for 6 years and have never been pulled over for them touch wood

nismo if you did get pulled over then surely they would fine you?
and do they pass the mot?
i fancy black plates for my red coop but i think i will get nicked striaght away.

they are not road legal coz of the year of car , no makers stamp , no bs kite mark so if i got pull they would find 3 faults with the plates and i would get a fine and have to change the plates then get it mot'ed again if the copper wanted to be realy funny with me , but in the 8 years of having black plates on my cars i haven't been pulled over for them and fingers crossed i won't . when it comes to the mot i have to change the plates back to normal one's for the mot then back again when i get home

iain - how did you clean the rocker? did you sand it down or keep the casting?

Ive brought some VHT RED PAINT the stuff they use on manifolds - im gna spray up a spare rocker i have at home and see how it comes out.

i used gunk and a jet washer , gunk it with a paint brush and work it in to the oil coated places and leave it to do its job for 15mins , then jet wash off and re-do if needs doing again ( watch out this stuff kills grass , i have 3 cam cover shapes on the front grass now ) , then dry it with a cloth but i didn't rub it down with sand paper . i did the underneath aswell while i was there so i didn't get oil everywhere . i used red high temp paint from halfords and it came out orange and chalky so went back and used a can of fiat swift red paint instead and got the colour i was after ( matches the strut brace now ) , then a petrol resistance clear coat so i can wipe the cover down when i spill oil on it as i always do

ok i will have a think as knowing my luck i will get pulled over.

i am changing my cam cover gasket soon so i will be doing my cover as well but i am thinking of getting a chrome red anodized look i have seen on here although it will cost alot.

its a 50/50 call on the plates , i'v just been very lucky i think that i haven't been pull with them .

i had the same idea as you peanuthead about getting mine done blue anodized but its quite costly to get done , then i thort about getting it chromed and thats about 120 notes not including the gasket so thort i'm gonna do it myself 40 notes with a new cam cover gasket and half a days working on it and its all done

yeah it is costly but it should look amazing but its alot of money for something you don't show off much and then i will want the ful rail, plenum,throttle body and heat shields polished or anodized as well so maybe 300-400 quid tho do the whole engine bay. or £50 in paint and autosol so im will have to think about this.

i think the black plates would be cool though.

what lacquer did you use mate?

i used halfords petrol resistance lacquer , its with the high temp paint , how did you get on with it mario ? the lacquer will dull the colour down abit if its orange and chalky like mine was

im working on it at the mo mate. i want to have the fiat and 20v in white and then fill the fiat logo in with blue so it will be blue with white text like the real logo. ive done my red base coat which as you said is a bit orange. i will do the text 2morrow an lacquer durin the week. will bring it down and show you at the ace on thurs

sounds good mario , the lacquer will make the paint go abit darker but thats why i went for the swift red , see you at the ace m8 .

I've been reading this thread as cleaning and painting parts of the engine may well be a summer job. Really like the look RusH has got:

Rocker Cover

This may be a silly question, but how did you get the metal so shiny? Has it been painted or just buffed up and then lacquered? Is it expensive / difficult / massively time consuming?

hi robcal, if it is really shiny i think he has probably bead blasted it (i think thats what its called) not sure how much that costs. As for doing it yourself it is a really easy job, it took me about 3-4 hours. Just read the how to guide on getting the rocker cover off and make sure that when you take the bolts out you put them back in the same hole. Here is what mine turned out like

Just make sure you replace the cam cover gasket (about £12 from fiat).

i cleaned it with gunk then jet washed it, left it to dry then i coated it with aluminium high temperature paint (3 coats) then i painted it and finished it off with petrol resistance laquer. All of the products i bought from halfords. Cost about £25 in all. Let me know how you get on mate

all those pic's look mint, I have decived to do it on mine now and cleaned all the engine (looks alot better allerady.)
But what are the tricks to the differant colours i.e colouring the Fiat letter and the 4 squares in the fiat badge?? Thanks Chris

That is the part that could be time consuming and take a lot of patience. I suppose you could put some masking tape over the letters (after you have painted the squares) then cut them out using a sharp blade??? Then you can either use a paintbrush to paint the letters or mask the whole area up and spray them. I was going to do this on mine but wasnt to sure

if you want to have the letters just in alloy,all you do is paint the cam cover and the get a sanding block and sand the paint of the letters flat,then laquer the hole cam,

ok cool i was thinking along the line of filling them with like playdoe and then picking it out when dry. Think im going to have ago on the plug cover first and see how it goes. What is best to use as a base coat?
