Mine was brand new from Fiat, not refurbished, and was fitted in my car in 2007. There may still be some left, there were 25 16vt engines left after mine.

Would an engine that had been sitting idle for around a decade be worth having? This was a serious question (I'm really hoping not, but I'm bracing for the possibility that I'll find myself in the market for a replacement engine at some point soon) Can anybody explain how/if an engine that had been sitting this long would be any good? pros and cons against a well reconditioned one etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one who might find insight on this helpful...

im interested in this statement about engines sitting around . . . why would it make a difference how long the engine has been sitting for? surly if its never been used it wouldnt be an issue? providing its been stored correctly? or am i wrong?

I was always advised when shopping for second hand cars to avoid the ones with stupidly low mileage because standing for long periods wasn't good mechanically... Maybe it doesn't apply if the engine's never been used, I don't know - hence the appeal to those more knowledgeable to shed some light. I could just be hopelessly misinformed - wouldn't be the first time - but it seemed worth asking

You'd surely want to store the engine nicely oiled up, wrapped in plastic with maybe something to take ensure there is no moisture inside the bag (silica gel sachets maybe).
It'd be wise to turn the engine over everynow and then to ensure nothing seizes - by hand ofcourse.
Make sure no weebly animals/bugs take shelter in the engine, plus there would need to be a oil change/priming process when the engine is started for the first time.
I don't know if there's any seals/gaskets that could possibly perish in that space of time, depends on how long they were stored for.

Engines can be mothballed for long periods. As Nobby says there are ways to preserve them.

I'd question why would you need a brand new one, unless it's paid for by some insurance policy.
Aren't there still plenty of cars being broken with pretty reasonable engines? I got a replacement 20v VIS engine a couple of years ago for about £400. It had done 41000 when I got it, and it's done 30000 since, and it's never missed a beat. OK, it's a gamble, but the saving is well worth it.
Ian.

a new engine is ALWAYS the best way to go. Steve at AA has some at about £2200. They are not recons, they are Brand new Fiat italy assembled units. All new/recon engines are well oiled on assembly, so storing them is not a problem. the 2nd hand engine route is a false economy unless on a budget IMO, as you wont know its past. Could have had a thrashed life, run low on oil etc.

Engines can be mothballed for long periods. As Nobby says there are ways to preserve them. The engine needs to be filled with a special storage oil which gives off a vapour that prevents the engine from seizing up. You block all the holes with plastic bungs and store it in a dry place. Should not be wrapped in plastic - to stop condensation.

Is it cheaper to buy a new Fiat engine rather than have one rebuilt by a specialist like Rog or Paul? I am attracted by the thought of a new engine, but if mine blew up I think I would want it rebuilt with up-rated internals, which might end up better than new so to speak, for perhaps about the same amount of money. Difficult call

you cant buy 20VT cranks, and you cant regrind them.
So a new engine makes perfect sense if you plan to keep your coupe for a long time.
Forget the value of the car, if you love it and want to keep it for many years yet then a new engine is a worthy investment IMO for the future, before they become unavailable.

Well it's not that bad - ring a Porsche dealer and ask them how much an engine for a Gayman is for example ?

FIat love charging over the end for new coupe parts! My new clutch cost near £200 from them at trade price. This has been a really interesting thread - cheers guys!
