A quick testamonial to the stuff ive just used to soundproof my car with...

I was looking to soundproof my car for ages but couldnt justify it based on the price so i asked a lad who builds kitcars at work what he uses/recommends.

The answer was bizarre but semi-logical and it came in the form of Builders Flashing Tape.

Being made and structured in an all too similar way to the off the shelf stuff and priced at 7 Quid for 1000x300mm i gave it a go.

I took all the carpet out of my boot and grabbed my crappy pair of paper scissors thinking i was about to be greeted by a tw@ of a job however i was mistaken.

I unrolled the roll, layed it out on the boot and cut it to size (using the affore mentioned crappy scissors) like it was paper. Cutting complex shapes around my fuel pump/loom was also dead easy.

Then i peeled the backing off and manouvered it into position, pressing it down with my hands adhered it nicely to the boot floor then i ran the back of a stanley knife in the "grooved" bits of the boot floor to which i was suprised to find it streched into and stayed in position beautifully.

I did the whole boot floor in less that 30 minutes and it looks O.E.

When i put the boot liner back down the tinnyness from the whole boot cavity was gone and it now has a nice dead thud when you put anything in there.

Putting it in the doors, or in the boot lid also gives you the same results, no tinny sounds and when you shut them it gives you that satisfying thud that the door of a vastily superior car does, though the stuff ways feck all.


In short, if youve googled the stuff and dismissed it as the work of a charlatan try it on the inside of your coop boot lid and if you dont think it sounds difference ill eat a whole assortments of hats.

you should do a "how-to" especially removing the door panels..

thos sounds too good compared to dynamat stuff.. i might pick some up today and do the boot lid, and checkthe 'thudness'

I would do a coop how-to but i sold mine a while ago, im just a loaner on this forum now cos its actually friendly unlike the other weird forums out there.

So whilst i couldnt swear itll make your boot sound like its made from metal rather than balsa wood im convinced it will cos its made my new car sound solider than a solid thing.

The stuff is called Hiflex (IIRC) Aquaseal Flashing Tape, you can expect to pay £7 for a roll.

Btw even if i could do a how-to there is really no need, once you get going you'll see that even a kid could do it, it really is that easy.

Also top tip, keep a can of WD40 handy for your scissors, they soon gum up.

Went to B&Q today and bought some aquaseal flashing tape but paid a lot more for it than £7, 10m x 225mm was £16.99.
As usual i got carried away when fitting the new speakers and put 2 layers of flashing tape on and then mounted the speaker onto 12mm mdp spacing ring and mounted the mdf with 5mm anti rattle foam to the door. Anything rattles i will go mad.
If i get time i may even do the rear 1/4's tomorrow.
This stuff is so easy to fit and cuts with out effort with a blade.

Right here we go the finished product.
Finished off soundproofing the front doors and boot today and must say the B&Q aqua flashing tape works a treat.
Double layer of flashing tape on front doors,12mm mdf spacing ring and 5mm anti rattle foam.

Had to slightly mod the door card due to spacing ring and size of speaker but here it is.

Where do you get the MDF spacers?

These are easly made.
I made loads of them in the past for different cars & projects.

Obviously you need the MDF & a good jig saw, bit of measuring, sand/paper & away you go. Easy peasy

I bought some of this stuff and it stunk to high heaven! Maybe I bought the wrong stuff..

One question I can't get out of my head is how much weight this would add if you were to use it throughout the whole car as mentioned in previous posts. Especially if two layers were to be applied.

Can anyone who has done this give me an idea of what weight is in one roll, and how many rolls would be required to do boot floor, bootlid, rear quarters and front doors. I would also consider doing under the rear seat if this would be advantageous to overall sound quality.

I ask this question, because I have already upgraded my rears to 6x9's, have a 12" sub in boot, and plans for upgraded fronts and tweeters, however I do not want to compromise performance unnecessarily.

I've often thought of doing this and had I kept the old coupe I would have done.
Oh well roll on the next coupe so I can give it a go!!

Im doing the rear 1/4's this week end so will let you know the weight, this should give you a good idea as we have the same sort of set up.
Now my system has had time to run in and settle down ive been cranking up the volume and wow it sounds mental. I can sit on the motorway at 100mph with both windows fully open and sunroof slid all the way back and still hear every note and word in the music with no distortion.
And yes this stuff stinks for the first couple of weeks.

Mine didnt smell of anything...

What's the material, how does it work and where can you buy it? I only have "kind of Dynamat" in mine, ca 15mm thick selfadhesive carpets. They are too thick for most places i the doors so I'm very interested in this!

Will add my own endorsement. Having read this string, I spent some happy time sticking Aqua Seal (from my local Builders Merchant) in the boot and doors - great improvement - nicer to drive, stereo is better, 'shutting' of doors/bootlid very refined - a simple and inexpensive mod

Resurrecting an old thread here but soon i will be replacing the carpet in my car and i'm wondering if adding a layer or two of flashing tape to the bare metal sections whilst the carpet is off is worth doing?

Well I've just done my front doors and it has made a nice difference, the bass is much punchier. Boot next!

Mine only needs the roof doing now, although I'm not sure I can be arsed to do it.

Also on rear sidepanels.
To make it stick more permanently I used hot glue around the edges.

A lot more quiet!
Did all panels in my Punto '01 as well, that made it even more quiet than the Coupe..

Did you say you used glue from a hot glue gun? They don't last very long on smooth surfaces and will drop off easily.

I've usually cleaned it well before, and it seem to stick well over years. Maybe depends on glue quality?

The "fruitcake" is self adhesive too. THAT seems to loosen, hence the hotglue addition.

hi guys, to sound proof your car propperly is around £80-100

the reason the propper sound proof deadening is exspencive is that it made to resist heat and odour, reflect sound and road noise.

Seems quite reasonable if you think how much flashing tape would be needed to do the whole car.

At the prices I was looking at on ebay this would have covered both rear quarters and the wheel well, but not the whole car.

if you want to sound proof the car from road noise use automotive sound proofing, i think its £1 a sheet, bought in 50 sheets,
avalible from body repair, car paints, suppliers like AM PANNELS in Leyton, london

for audio applications, you dont need to plaster to whole door in sound deadening, most of these how to do guides by the manufactures of these sound deadening is just to get you to buy more.

the best sound deadening product out there is this stuff you spray using a compressor and air gun and it turns to a hard cerment texture, abit like fibire glass.

i wish i could explain the way i apply the sound deadening but its an art really

remember you tube is your friend! use it

i mostly use max mat from my suppliers, five sheets is enough to do the front woofers, then another pack for the rear speakers, two packs for the boot, job done.

always have a dewalt heat gun and wooden ended roller, gloves and clean the surfaces that your applying with a spirt on a clean cloth like meth or mild thinners

as for Bitumen Tape, if you see tar or smell tar on a hot day you now know why

I read in the link you did put up on sound deadener showdown, which implies that you don't need countless sheets to sounddeaden effectively, but beyond that there is nothing due to the site not being finished. Are there particular areas which resonate more than others or specific areas which are a must for deadening?
