Guys I was wondering which type of FMIC allows better cooling and is more widely used? Is it the tube and fin or bar and plate?

From what I remember from the last time this was discussed tube and fin is the way to go.

I'm hoping to be organising a Group Buy for a Pro Alloy FMIC kit shortly. This is an excellent kit that about 16 guys bought into before the old forum went down. It is a tube and fin core, which is allegedly the best.

Keep an eye on the Group Buy forum over the next couple of weeks for more details, or check out Pro Alloy's Website , which includes photos of my car with the kit fitted <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.

This is from the old forum

Well It seems to be agreeing with what I have read on a google search, that is people can't agree which type is best. I did a search and it was maybe 60/40 in favour of tube and fin, The argument being they are more thermally efficent on the outside, but not so good on the inside, however the light weight etc seems to push it slightly in favour of the Tube & Fin.

This is from another forum

"what i can contribute to the answer would be derived from my 5 and a half year stint in a thermal dynamics lab.

air velocity is not the end all for heat transfer and sometimes you achieve better resultant transfer with a lower velocity of air and more contact area for the transfer to take place.

i'd put my money on the tube and fin for larger contact surface if thermal conductivity is the only measure.

the bar and plate design would give you better flow of your induction air and higher induction air temps for a given size intercooler.

which is more important to you? "
