I thought it was about time I wrote an update!
In summary, the detonation in June last year caused lots of bits of the old pistons to break off and scratch the cylinder walls, damage most of the valves and leave the head with impact marks. The crankshaft had damage caused by the rods walking up and down. The turbo blades were also mangled.
Rebuild comprised of 10 new intake valves from FIAT, 10 new custom made exhaust valves from Ferra, 5 custom rods from Carrillo, new crank from FIAT, rebore to 83.5mm and the head rebuilding.
I finally got the engine back off lightSpeed on 15th May. I was initially shocked to see the calculated compression ratio was now 9.3:1. Fortunately there was a 6 mistaken for a 0 in the calculations and the compression ratio is actually 8.3:1 which is what we wanted. As low as the pistons dictate to reduce chances of detonation with the fuel here. The quality of the engine build is very high. All finished very nicely with all the blueprinted details on two sheets of paper.
I eventually went for 120 and 107 for the timing of the intake and exhaust cams. We'll just have to see how she runs.
I spent an hour unloading the engine out the back of the Jeep Saturday morning and started to assemble the rest of the engine. A busy day, fitted:
Camshaft cover
Cambelt cover
Timing pulley
Front engine support bracket
Intake manifold
RPM sensor
Knock sensors
Oil pressure sensor
Driveshaft support
Oil breather
Rear bracket for wires
Oil dip stick
Thermostat
Water temperature sensor
Flywheel
clutch
Gearbox
Rear engine mount
Starter motor
Driveshaft
Unfortunatly I'm stuck now. I used a couple of the engine mounting bolts to hold the engine onto the engine stand. Lightspeed mounted the engine onto a different stand when it came back from machining and when I picked it up they couldn't find the bolts. I can't fit the engine into the engine bay without these bolts. Very frustrating as Monday is a holiday here and would have been able to make a substantial attempt and connecting everything else back together. Hopefully Lightspeed can fond the bolts on Tuesday but I'll order some from the UK as backup. Looks like another week delay.
Weather the last couple of days has been beautiful 24 degrees and sun. Didn't mind being in the garage through. Having say that we're expecting a high of 3 degrees on Monday and snow!!
I did find what look like cracks on one of the cam caps. It's the one that sits between cylinder 1 and 2 on the intake side. I'm not sure why this one is necessary because all the other caps are between each of the pairs of valves. What can be done about it?
