I read somewhere on the internet that some guy had a 1970-something VW that had done over a million miles! I wonder what the maximum a Coupe could go to is? Who has the highest mileage Coupe? isn't it Nigel??

Mine is a 1997 with 89k on it, and the donkey and transmission are in the peak of fitness. It still gives over 2.5 bar of oil pressure when hot, and has good compression, doesn't make any funny noises and hardy uses any oil.
Lower mileage may also mean a car has done lots of short trips, which is generally a bad thing on any car.

hmmm well, although it is on a different scale, i drive hgv's for a living, and i once had a Y reg daf xf that had done over a million miles before the firm sold it!
i think mileage is not really that relevant, it all depends on how well the vehicle has been maintained, and also more importantly, how it has been driven.
a car that has spent most of its life bouncing off the redline is more likely to suffer from high mileage, just the same as a car that has never been above 3k (like your nans micra!!)
at the end of the day, cars are built to be driven, and therefore with a model of car like the coupe, which is not exactly new shall we say, you have to expect a good few miles.
mine has done just under 90k and has no real issues, mainly bodywork to be honest, stone chips, tesco dings etc.

I've got 132k on an R reg. Gearknob and drivers seat are looking a wee bit tired, but otherwise you'd struggle to tell.

Mine had 117K on it when I sold it, it produced 193BHP at the hubs as standard at around 116K However, if I'm honest it had began to get a little tired, windows seemed to be slowing, diff had started leaking oil, and the suspension had seen better days. Ben

I recently drove another 20VT coupe - same year as mine but with only 44,000 miles. (Mine has 59,000) Compared to mine the engine felt strained and coarse with a 'worn out' sounding noise. In my opinion I doubt very much that the mileage was genuine.
So mileage isn't everything.

97 P 125k here. Also drove a 350k London Taxi to Istanbul (long story) including a 34 hour stint with only stops for diesel and it didn't use a drop of anything. Was utterly indestructable. (apart from the bonnet catch)

So mileage isn't everything. Nope I'll turn 214,000 on the way home tonight. Apart from a stone-chipped front end, the only giveaway is my oil pressure - now down to below 1.5 bar when very hot. However, it still gets to 3 bar as soon as there's more than 2,000rpm on the dial, so I'm not at all bothered.
