While Leighton was mapping my car, I asked him to pay close attention to the off-boost fuelling at around 2,000 - 3,000 rpm, as this is my normal cruising range. Leighton was able to lean lean the fuelling off for small throttle openings and negative manifold pressure, while still keeping it safe as soon as I floor it.

Yesterday I had the chance to test how good it is, on a trip from the Midlands to Exeter and back.

Round trip of 375 miles - I decided to cruise at the legal limit, so an indicated 75mph, which on my GPS gave exactly 70mph. I had the very occasional wander up to an indicated 80 in order to get past dawdling middle-lane hoggers (weird how conspicuously slow I felt doing 70 in the right-hand lane)

I filled up again this morning - just under 44 litres, which equates to over 38mpg for the entire trip (which included about 10 miles of suburban roads at the beginning and the end of the trip)

How many alternative cars could give the option of 0-100 in less than ten seconds, with a genuine 170+ top speed OR almost 40mpg on a gentle cruise?

I wonder if it would do as well on 95RON, as it seems quite a waste to use most of a tank of V-Power when you know you're not going to be using the turbo very much

that is very impressive nigel
i am often amazed at how good my car is on fuel
last time i filled up i tripped the odo and the next time i went to fill up, i had done 387 miles, and this was even before the fuel light was on, so you could probably say another 40ish miles!!
not too shabby for a 12 year old 2L 20v 5pot!!

I drove up to Catterick last weekend and managed 390 miles round trip with the light just starting to flicker.

All this will a fully laden car, air con on most of the time and some nice blats along the way.

I only filled up when I got nearer to Northamptonshire as the traffic was really bad from the GP and I didn't want to run out laugh

My coupe was far less thirsty than the old 1.3 8V engine in my 106! Unless you boost everywhere, then it got a little thirsty!

Coopless!

I drove my 20v to scotland! Filled up at the same time as DanDan (to the first click) and drove same miles, same roads and both had the odd blast round some bends.

Filled up again same time and i'd got 37mpg DanDan had 30mpg laugh (Obv not a very eco driver)

And coming back i got almost 390miles out of the coop and still had another bar to go (On a long run) but as i havent had the car long i got spooked and filled her up tongue

I have been driving a fair bit on motorways recently mainly up the M5, M6, M4 and M42 and i find cruising around 75mph doesn't make hardly any differnce to drivng slower at 60mph.

Just filled up yesterday and had done 455 miles with just under a 1/4 left showingm, filled up with just over £55 worth of BP super and acheived 40.28mpg laugh first time i have acheived over 40mpg. Usually get around mid to high 30's.

This is with the aircon on at times and a bit of town driving at times and the odd passenger. i am amazed at the coupe speed when required and economy, although the 6th gear greatly helps with the economy on the motorway. my old coupe only used to return around low 30's in comparison.

That's not too bad Did, it's around 27mpg, depending on how much you pay per litre. If you're worried, start by doing a boost leak check smile

I have the opposite problem, where I think a 5 gear car has got 6.

I'd get just over 400 miles on a long run in my VIS, whereas my modded 20vt gets just over 300 miles from a tank.

My better half has a Hyundai Getz on a 55 plate, think it's a 1.3, does 260 on a tank (£33ish) which is around 38 mpg, which I thought was shocking for a small city car type thing.

However, just worked out my Landy does 11.8 MPG average, so it's amazing in comparison!

same here, although mine's a plus - mainly town driving with some 30 - 40 mile round trips, so don't expect too much. will be testing this when i go from burton to torquay later this summer, and am hoping for at least 350 from a tank...

I'm sure I read somewhere on here that use of 6th gear on a long run can equate to 100 miles more more a tank smile

Mines terrible atm, running very rich. I got 200 miles from a full tank this week. I think somethings up with it so i'm planning on putting a standard chip in soon.

You live on the other side of the country and you say that as if you know how I drive mate?

As it happens on a weekly basis my car get's floored about 5 or 6 times tops!

27mpg...hmmm not too bad!

Note the lack of posts by 16VT owners! 16VTs pwn fuel and no amount of mapping can sort that out!

I have seen your old youtube vids didcoop, (side exit exhauest, your speed runs on a "runway", your rollers vid, Your other vids with the honda vtec, none of which i can now find. you were not exactly hanging about in any of them, so yeh, i have a good understanding that you like to drive fast when its safe and controlled)

Any how...It was intended as a light hearted joke, dont take it as anything above that

I'm pretty sure I managed to get 34mpg from my 16vT on a run from Newcastle-Boston once...I was pretty happy with that smile

...but then when you compare it with the 48mpg from my old MGF on the same run, somehow it doesn't seem as impressive tongue
