The thing is that realistically a coupe is worth £5k it's just that prices are so crap at the moment because everyone is undervaluing their cars. If everybody stated putting their prices up people would pay

If everybody stated putting their prices up people would pay Nah, all that would happen is there would be 100's of pages of coupes in the auto trader because nobody would buy them

You can buy a coupe for a ridiculous price at the moment. Sub £1k for a 20VT in many cases. This low price tag attracts people who have little money and little knowledge of the coupe other than the fact that they are quite fast. With no money to maintain the coupe and the inevitable thrashing it will receive lead to it's eventual demise and then what happens? They get broken because they know that they will be worth more in parts.
As long as people are flogging their coupes for silly money it's going to attract certain buyers (mostly of the burberry wearing ilk) and then the coupe gets lumbered with it's chavvy image until we break the cycle.

I've noticed a slight rise in the last few months, overall that is, it's easy to point at individual examples, but the price of decent well looked after coops, especially the late platers has been creeping up. They may not be realising the asking price, but the start price is certainly creeping up, so people do seem to appreciate how much they "should" be worth.
I think you'll see good originals starting to fetch increasingly good money over the next couple of years, now would be a good time to grab a mint original keeper I reckon.

You're right. We need to get the rubbish coupes out of circulation. Unfortunately there are even coupes for sale on here which are in good condition and have been well looked after but are going for a lot less than what they are worth because the sellers obviously need to sell them but the market is flooded with cheap coupes and the average buyer thinks that all coupes are cheap. Unfortunately the buyers are dictating the prices at the moment and it should be the other way around.

Still, at least there is a good supply of parts at the moment with all the coops being killed, it's a shame, but it all adds up in the end. All the desirable older cars go through this stage before there are only the loved ones left, look at older Alfa's, Fiats, Lancias in general, they just vanish, only ever to be seen in small numbers at club meets and classic car shows, it's the way of the world.
Long live the coop!

If this is a really mint, genuine car, it's not a ridiculous price. Originality, condition and history are what sets the best examples of any classic car apart from the hundreds/thousands of modified, knackered and history-less vehicles clogging ebay.
The mileage is very attractive, it's the right colour and it's an early car which are getting rare in this condition. Plus you get a warranty which is very attractive to nervous buyers who are scared of buying an old, complex Italian car.

*Stands back and waits for the flood of derision* I totally agree Alan. If this car has a full history, low milage and has obviously been cherished by a single owner then it could make the asking price. If you had always wanted a 16v coupe and decided now was the time to buy, wouldn't you want a to find a car like this ? Think about it ! If the ad read 120k, 6 owners ,chipped, large turbo, decat, bodykit, after market wheels with some history, most serious buyers would walk away leaving the £900 brigade to move in. Thats not saying the coupes not a great car to mod its just that you have to accept you doing it for pleasure and you will loose its value. There are exceptions to this- Stainless exhaust, good brakes and suspension are sensable upgrades which, although they aren't likely to increase value, are unlikely to devalue it. Mess with the engine or body and it,s goodbye Mr Cash !! Having said all that I doubt any of us brought our cars for an investment. We just love/hate them.

Is it because it's a 16vt that people think it's overpriced? I don't understand why people think it's worth less than the 20vt when it is much rarer? People just get a fixed idea of how much something is worth in their heads before they even know anything about it!

I don't think it's neccessarily because it's a 16vt, most wouldn't pay that for a similar 20vt at the mo.

If you had always wanted a 16v coupe and decided now was the time to buy, wouldn't you want a to find a car like this ? Nah... I disagree! Put it this way, hands up who here on the forum would be happy, if the car is a nice example with FSH, to hand over £4,995 for it and feel that they've paid a reasonable price for the car. Some of you seem to be forgetting one thing. It's just a car. People pay what they want to pay. I'm pretty sure a rotten Escort Mexico would easily go for £5000. Why? Cuz that's what people want to pay. Fiat Coupes are expensive to insure, cost a bomb to run and repair. Plus they have a Fiat badge on the bonnet. So in a recession -surprise surprise- no wants them. I'm glad Coupes are cheaper to buy. That way maybe we'll get more people doing innovative things to them, instead of wheel-nut polishing knobby 'VAG' types. If you want something expensive to drive in that goes well with your Oakleys shades, there are plenty of Audis out there.

If I was going to spend that kind of money I'd rather pay another 1000 and get the Alfa GTV on the next page John
