Hi all, nice forum (and cars) you have here.
On the way home today, I got absolutely mullered by a dark blue Fiat Coupe 20v in Kidderminster. He blew past me when we were both in full throttle 2nd gear acceleration and then proceeded to disappear at an alarming rate (up to the speed limit). God knows what he'd had done to it!!
I was just wondering if anyone knew if he was a member on here? It was seriously quick!!!
To the owner...If you ever read this, I was the guy in the blue R32 fading away in your mirror on the ring road. Great car bud!
Cheers Dave

a lightly modded 20VT will pull away from an R32, although not at an alarming rate. VW just didnt get it right with the R32, needed 300bhp out of the box IMO. Did the 20VT look modified? (exhaust etc?) Welcome in any case. Perhaps time to supercharge the golf?!

Hi Rog, mine is running at 270bhp and 270 lb/ft (Dyno Dynamics RR). I am considering supercharging it in 2010. Incidents like today make it hard not to lol ;-)
Judging by the pace, it was heavily modified! It also looked modified (larger tail pipe and I think it was lowered). It had the occasional plume of faint blue smoke coming from the exhaust.

How bizarre,
Not three weeks ago had a similar meeting with an 08 R32. Although I did not annihilate him, just slowly crepped away!

Sounds like it was running quite a bit more boost, possibly a GT spec turbo = 330bhp approx. Coupes hve very long gears compared to your golf, our 2nd gear wil hit 76mph on a 5 speed box, your golf hits 58 if i remember correctly?, so he has an edge in that area for sure. What have you done to your R32 for 270BHP? remap and intake/exhaust?

That sounds like it could be NickD, a 16vt? Meant to say, are you sure it was a 20v Turbo?

Bulldog/Dan, thanks for the warm welcome!
Elder81, he must not have been trying lol. Tbh, R32's don't make good drag racers but they have very good grip and become a weapon in wet conditions.
Rog, interesting point on the gears, mine does max at 58/59mph in 2nd. It was a safe/controlled bit of fun (not like your typical Corsa/Saxo driver who would rather crash than be slower).
My R32 has a high output out of the box (263bhp stock, should be 248 - dyno'd at same RR). I have a CAI and exhaust which gives me a 7hp increase. I'm not mapped as it would be a waste of time/money if I decide to go S/C next year. Tuning an N/a engine is expensive!
Hopefully the owner is on here, would be great to know what power he was running. This would give me a great insight into how fast I would accelerate compared to now if I go the FI route.
Flea, I presumed it was a 20V Turbo but no idea really...?

Flea, I think it may well have been Nick_D. I've been reading his posts and he's based in Kidderminster, his car looks a dead ringer and he has an exhaust smoke issue. Any idea what he's running now he's had your remap and been to motormech?
350bhp?

They're a bit chubby aren't they the R32's? Crikey, just had found this evo review that says "Weight is a problem with the R32. A kerb weight of 1447kg is a lot for a hatch - but then this one has four-wheel drive and a six-pot engine" The coupe's around 1300-1320KG's for the 16V version, so already you're carting around my weight extra, and I'm a fatty
 Coopless!

welcome mate,
I must admit the R32 is a nice looking car! Seems to have a little bit of wide boy attitude and I with a standard set up they have a nice sound to them!

I posted on here a while back (with an amount of criticism, but it was completely my fault for being an idiot and posting...), that R32s don't compare with the 20vt. It did surprise me, I had always assumed them to be on par with 20vt figures.

Don't worry - we're keeping an eye on the thread... As far as we can see at the moment (see original post), a Fiat Coupe accelerated hard in second gear up to the speed limit and an R32 owner commented that it was accelerating faster than his car was capable of. I'm hoping that it was a national speed limit, as its pretty obvious that full throttle in 2nd gear most Coupes will see you past 30mph

"I got absolutely mullered ". "He blew past me when we were both in full throttle 2nd gear acceleration and then proceeded to disappear at an alarming rate (up to the speed limit)". "I was the guy in the blue R32 fading away in your mirror on the ring road". He proceeded to disappear at an alarming rate! A R32 Fading away in the mirror on a ring road...and all before you hit 70mph ? Oh such a fine, fine line. I just don't think we need any backwards steps on the forum. The old 'VS' section was an accident waiting to happen.IMHO Thanks Tim

So is it now OK to have a coupe VS thread....as long as its the other car that starts the thread ??? It sure it's a fine line !! And I'm confused again Sorry, I didn't mean to cause any issue. Just one petrol-head appreciating another's motor. With regards to weight and which is faster (etc. etc.)… Mk5 Golf R32 ---------------- 248 bhp 236 lb/ft 1447 kg ---------------- BHP Per Ton: 174 Fiat Coupe 20vT ---------------- 217 bhp 229 lb/ft 1310 kg ---------------- BHP Per Ton: 168 BUT.. The R32 will have higher transmission loss. I'd say it was a dead heat between two good cars! I remember really admiring the design of the Coup when I first saw it (ahead of it's time) and it still looks smart today. Hopefully Nick_D spots this thread and confirms if it was him or not ;-) Cheers Dave

Guilty your honour!:-D take me down! It was a dual track then ring road then another dual track, so perfectly legal! Hi to dave who started this thread, and a big thankyou for pointing out my blue smoke issue as i now know it IS burning a little oil and that its the not the dreaded head gasket .....again! Goin to motormech monday to diagnose blue smoke and hopefully re shim the head as i believe timing is a little out! As for power i believe i'm prob runnin around 330 bhp on the road but not gonna get rollin roaded till been to motor mech! So funny i spotted this thread, my internet is down at mo, so logged in on my phone.... All i could see of the title was, "R32 driver" and i thought, i wonder...? Funny! Can't believe i made such an impression!.... Nick Whoop whoop! Haha, glad you've spotted the thread and it was you lol. I was just really surprised because I presumed we'd have pretty even cars. Your car looked really good! I guessed from the exterior you wouldn't be standard but still quite shocking. It's good to know roughly what you’re running at as I might be going FI next year and thought your acceleration was spot on (I'm not after a 500bhp monster). I calculate your car to be 256bhp per ton. I would need to get up to nearly 370 (an extra 100 bhp) to be even..! Hope, you get the niggles sorted out soon, might see you on a private road in 2010 when I'm charged bud ;-) Cheers Dave PS. JKD, Tempting given this week but I'm planning on my first Italian car being a Murcielago LP640 ;-)

I'll be looking out for you buddy..... Lol! To be honest I was surprised how I went past you and to be totally honest I had to back off at the very start of second gear, as I got a little close to you!! Can't wait to get car dyno'd again now as if you have around 270 I'm surely over 320, we shall see hey! See you around .... Nick.....
