No. It's not one of the greatest drivers cars but I'd say it was one of the top 100 most tempting and satisfying cars to own for reasonable money.

MMMmmm..!!! ..Very subjective though!, Depends who's doing the driving! Sort of agree how some would be up there (Not that i have ever driven any ) ..Doesn't surprise me the Caterham is there or the GT3 & we know about the Zonda from Top gear!..........A few surprises with the MX5 & Lotus Elan (was that the one with the Isuzu engine? or have i got it wrong?) Some British (3) some Italian, French ,Jap & a German,,,,Obviously Nothing of American Origin !

I really fancy a clio Trophy as my next car.
I'm very tempted by the new Clio 200 with Cup chassis. Autocar rated it very highly last week in their group handling test - Not sure about the new front styling yet though.

no it was the original elan, a consumate handler!!..the fwd didnt feature if i recall correctly, which is strange as it is said to be one of THE benchmarks for fwd chasss...doesnt surprise me that the mk1 mr2 and puma were in, they are superb fun to drive and handle superbly..handling aint about power or grip, its about feel a,d fluidity and an ability to faithfully translate what nthe driver wants intowhat the car does...the coop , to me, seems to be more about grip than handling..it goes around corners very well, very quickly, its just not the most communicative car in the world..but then, it is about the most fun you can have for sensible money and has THOSE looks... MMMmmm..!!! ..Very subjective though!, Depends who's doing the driving! +1 on the MR2 MK1 being in there, its definitely a drivers car. I miss my old MK1, brilliant fun for less money than a coop. Not quite as practical or fast but bloody awesome in a different way to the coop.
Heard good things about the Puma as well, was on my shortlist for consideration at the same time as the coop, though the coops power & looks sealed it for me!

I think the F50's hype was its biggest problem - was marketed as an F1 car for the road and I think the press got annoyed when it obviously wasn't....was a stupid thing to say though really.
Its got much much better reviews later on in its life than when it first came out.

The Puma was a great car, I bought one in 98. The 1.7 Yamaha VVT engine was a proper cracker and handling was sublime, every time I went round a certain corner I would think "Hmmm I could have gone quicker".
On the subject of the engine I read that every engine was made in Wales then air-freighted to japan for Yamaha to tune and was then airfreighted to Germany to go onto the production line and be fitted to the car. As each engine was individually tuned, this was one of the reasons why the Racing Puma struggled in tests against the original 1.7 Puma. (Some Pumas put out more than the official 123BHP)
BUT, I don't think it has aged as well as the Coupe, Ford's "New edge" design quickly stalled with KA, Focus, Cougar and then went back to conservative designs.
F40 was widely regarded as better than F50 when F50 was released.
MR2 Mk1 was an excellent little mid-engined coupe, in all honesty it was like a new version of the Fiat X1/9. Mk2 wasn't as good though.
Saddest thing is that I haven't driven any of the top 10 cars!

Not massively fast, not particularly great handling (good, but not great). Coops are quite quick, nice looking, and cheap. i think generally you'd need to define what a drivers' car actually is - different drivers want different things, and if i had to do big mileage every week i certainly wouldn't want to do it in a pug 205 or a puma.... Mrs Mona has a Puma 1.7 & I can vouch that it is a great smiles per mile car. Kart-like handling & a very buzzy (no red line!) engine. My old Coupe would thrash it in a straight line, but on a twisty B road I'd fancy my chances in the Pumes. Good info on P2 about the engine too. Once the engine & suspension of the Coupre has been modded a bit. I'd say it would sneak into the top 100!

id say yes..bottom line, computers and electrics can and do improve a cars handling, but the car must be capable of handling before the electricery kicks in...as the old adage suggests, you cant polish a turd...and no amount of electrical polishing will make a turd go round corners if its not designed to do so...

What a load of POO! Who on here has driven a Zonda????? Names below please! Awful these polls, most people will never get to drive most of these cars! Still, sells magazines I suppose! To add to the debate, as a drivers car, the Coupe rates far behind a lot of machinery I'm afraid, but who cares, it's gorgeous, quick enough, agile enough and rare. Who could ask for more, especially at the prices they are fetching now. Long live the coop! G G
