I have always considered the coop a relatively manly car; the shape, its big(ish) engine, its performance, the fact that it's been called a Don Johnson-mobile by a certain influential motoring journalist. However, several people have infact commented that it's a 'gay'/'hairdressers' car. I really cannot see the logic behind this; am I the only one to experience this? Is it mere jealousy? OR is it actually quite a 'fem' car. Please help me reassert my feeling of manliness (Insert irony here)

Please let me add that I don't think that the term gay is offensive, and that when people said that my MGF was a gay car, I generally agreed with them. However, it's simply my disagreement that the coupe is in the same league phew.

mine gets called a "gay" car and a hairdressers car by people at work all the time - i attribute this to their complete lack of style, knowledge and taste, given that a quick survey of the car park reveals a selection of old rovers, couple of 's' plate volvos, an orange st, a honda civic type r in a distinctly pink shade of red and a mottley selection of french/german euro boxes......let the hoi polloi eat cake and have their laughs, they dont get to go home in a coupé....

(who is a very nice bloke actually) & i've HAD 2. I dont think they're a "gay" car just can be enjoyed by both sexes. A few people commented on my car being a "gay/hairdressers" car at work but they soon got over that when they realised how much maintenance and effort you have to put into it. ... and its not like a Mini convertible i think most people can pull it off. A very very manly burly old hairy bloke who is a building contractor now owns my yellow car.. so that proves it. (He not gay btw) Meh. i miss my car

I dont think MX5's are hairdresser either, wouldnt mind one for the pure driving pleasure. As for Coupes... well, you might think they are, until they rip your head off with a loud roar. A 16V n/a possibly.

I keep getting the same from the Focus 1.6 boys at work, I just reply "She's more car than you can handle." Any who say it is and the drivers not then it must be the opposite of say an M5, that is to say we have nothing to make up for/ no insecurity/ know who we are. Most hair dressers drive minis/bugs no?

ive never heard this said or even thought about a coupe being a hairdressers car ??? i love the mx5 and dont think of it as a hairdressers car, but i can see why some people might make comments like that, mainly due to its size, being small 2 seater, which why cars like the mr2, mgf, kopen etc. But the coupe is a big 4 seater coupe, i can see it as jealousy. Also dont forget the thread last month about "is that a ferrari daddy" i bet civic, focus owners dont get that.

hehe well said JKD i was quite surprised when i started reading this thread, ive never heard the coupe reffered to as gay or hairdressers car! I wouldnt be too happy if some one did say that though. But then again i have heard people say porto blue is a girly colour which i actually dont think it is my self and even if i wasnt a girl i still wouldnt think it was girly. Porto blue is the best colour though !

Previous car was a Suzuki Cappucinno of which i did get a few comments from the gays (sorry guy's,lol) at work.. Ref 'hair-dresser'.. But hey it was a fun car to drive..As for the Coupe.. I'm not sure a hair-dresser could handle the power so I dis-agree..Its a man's car with true GRUNT.

i have to admit i have never had any 'thats a gay car' comments about my car, which is a porto...
most people just want to know what it is, and then cant belive its a fiat!
as for the colour, just like it is on here, complete marmite thing.
could be worse though, could be a sprint blue...

It's the same people who don't have a clue about the Fiat Coupe. They probably assume it's built on an Uno with a 1301cc engine. Audi TT is gay.

I must admit i've never heard that about the coupe - but i have heard it about the MX5, MGF and Audi TT - all of which are good cars to drive and always get rave reviews about handling and being fun to drive. So whether it is a gay car or not. I doubt anyone who says that has actually driven one or been in one as a passenger. The coupe handling isn't great as standard but it is so much fun to drive - so it's in good company and puts a smile on my face every day i drive it. As for colours of coupe - we all know that Sprint Blue and Yellow are the only proper colours - all the others were just there to use up old paint

Most of the blokes I know are too busy slating the chavy boy racer Saxo's, 106's and Corsa's etc. so I never get anything but posative comments. Stereotyping sports cars is a little common these days but most who do comment are usualy gealous and enveous so who cares what they think, just ask 'what do you drive then?' I do agree 99% of German cars are 'gay' (and all French cars are )
