I'm just about to put together a custom centre console to house a 7" touchscreen for an in car PC, and to do so I wanted to reduce the space taken up by all the fiat switches and replace them with something more compact.

I've taken my spare centre console apart and have inspected all the switches/circuits to see what would need to be done, I'll post a complete shakedown of all the details when its completed, along with wiring/circuit diagrams if anyone else fancies trying this.

Initial findings:
Fan position is cable type (not electronic) so needs to be remounted not too far from where it already is unless you want to extend/replace the cable.
3 switch block for C/L, Rear demist and Alarm LED all runs off 12v (alarm LED is 12v, illumination LEDs for other buttons are LED with pull down resistor).
3 switch block for Hazards, Fr Fog, Rr Fog has a relay and diodes on the circuit for switching the indicator lights. Illumination as before (LED with pull down resistors) except the hazard light which uses a 12v white bulb (non LED) with low supply via diode/resistor from illumination source voltage and then higher supply voltage from relay when switched.

My plan is fabricating a new centre console from 2mm aluminium panel, housing the existing fans at the top, a monitor below with switches/LEDs alongside, fan pos/temp/fan speed and clock/boost gauge below that, and then an Alpine headunit/USB port/Ciggy lighter/PC power and reset buttons at the bottom.

All switches are aluminium, and I plan on etching them then spraying decals on the top of them with a stencil.

The in Car PC should be a fairly cheap effort as I've sourced a touchscreen from the US for £95 delivered, will spend £50 on an Intel Atom 270 mainboard and £35 ish on a decent in car PSU. Already got ehough memory/HD/DVD drives etc and I'll custom fabricate a case using aluminium panel (which will act as an additional heatsink)... I'm hpoing to fit it under the dash, but at a stretch might have to put it under a seat.

Once completed I'll run an in car app on the PC like RideRunner or similar, some engine diagnostic stuff, and can then add all the goodies: Live petrol prives (GPS linked), Sat Nav, Live traffic camera views (GPS linked) etc etc....

If you fancy rewiring your centre console with new switches then I'd suggest a few things:

1) Make sure you understand the little circuits in the switches and what they do... some can be ignored and new switches wired directly into the looms.. others can't and the easiest option is to resuse the existing circuit boards

2) If you get a 2nd hand centre console cheap (with switches) then you don't have to worry about wrecking your centre console switches.

3) Don't remove the fan speed/temp potentiometers from their housings as the housing is actually a part of the switch and forms part of the switch body... if you remove the back the switch comes apart and is fiddly to reassemble. If you want to mount the fan speed/temp/fan position switches differently to standard then the easiest way will be to butcher the entire switch block by cutting the plastic frame into 3 pieces and then cutting off any excess unwanted plastic.

Edit to add:
4) Reuse the existing wiring blocks so that your new centre console is a swap in/out with no hard wiring needed (if you move the fan speed/temp/fan pos then you'll also need to remove that block of switches too)
5) Think of an imagainative way to secure your new centre console so that it leaves the original mountings intact and does not snag the original console... that way you can then easily swap back to your standard console if you sell up.

I'll post up some wiring diagrams and circuit schematics once I'm done with wiring... along with some piccy's once the install is completed laugh

I'll be getting my hands on the aluminium panel in the next few days, the switches today, so by sunday I should have a new centre console with all the switches installed and wired.

I'll stick some pics up on the weekend.

7" touchscreen should arrive in the next 5-10 days via USPS from the US.

Its not too difficult a project, so long as you have a complete spare set of switches. The hardest part is going to be bending the aluminium panel neatly and brazing in reveals around the fan vent.

The onyl design issue left to resolve is to make sure that there is enough clearance bahind where I've planned to put everything, but I think I'm ok on that... just need to check that the headunit won't snag on the metalwork behind where the ashtray sits now laugh
Hopefully not, otherwise I'll have to rejig the design a little.

Spookly,

IIRC this has been done before, though i cant remember who by. If you havent already seen it a quick search should give you some more info, though you obviously already know what you are doing!

Just a thought, may help.

Good Luck!

I've now got my aluminium panel ready.

Only snag is that the switches I bought were completely censored so they've been returned. The only switches I could find that I likes cost £7-10 each, and I need 9 or 10... bit pricey.

So I'm also building custom switches using more aluminium and a set of cheap switches... should be interesting.

I've also started work on a fiat coupe customised version of RideRunner (AKA RoadRunner) which is a skinnable ICE software freeware package... it'll support everything out of the box specifically for the UK, and be coupe themed.

I'll post some piccy's up on sunday, as I should at least have a bent aluminium panel and some switches in it by then.

Started on doing my custom buttons, then realised I was being stoopid. Instead of trying to cut nice aluminium discs from aluminium plate to fit in the holes (cut using a 20mm holesaw to be perfectly round and about 22mm) it would be easier to use 20mm aluminium bar as that'll be lovely and round laugh

I've now bent my aluminium panel for the centre console and its looking pretty good. Can't go any further until the touchscreen arrives as I need to take it apart and decice how to mount it before any more cutting or drilling.

All parts for the in car PC are now ordered and turning up over the next few days:
Intel D945GCLF2 Motherboard
1 Gb Ram (already had it lying around)
80Gb SATA hard drive
50pin Slimline IDE DVD
50pin IDE to SATA adaptor
Long SATA Cables (power and Data)
ASUS FM Radio card (Radiator compatible)
M2-ATX Car Power Supply
Car Amp wiring kit (10 gauge, good for >40A)
4 Channel Car Amplifier
USB GPS Receiver

As a sub project I have also been looking at creating some software to interface with the Fiat ECU, along with some help from Barnacle (Cheers Neil laugh )... and was going to create a Bluetooth ECU link, but have now canned this idea in favour of a modified Barnacle widget. This will have no LCD display and will just send ECU data down the serial port to a PC. I'll then create a Flash projector application that will listen to the data off the serial port and give a nice graphical display and provide data logging, graphs etc.
Just to be extra silly, I am also going to use the microcontroller on the modified barnacle alike device to connect a number of other sensors so I can get data about them too (where they aren't available from the ECU) like: Oil Pressure, Boost pressure (will need to reuse an old MAP sensor and hook it up with circuit etc), Oil temp, cabin temp, external temp... Then I can do things like have audible warning for low pressure, high temps... and also create a nice timing feature (0-60 timing, standing mile or 1/4 mile times etc), Range calculations, MPG etc.

I'll upload a simple wiring diagram later on... watch this space. Might even get around to a few pictures when I get a bit further.

Spookly

Attached is a rough mock up of my new centre console and layout... also attached is a basic wiring diagram of how its going to fit together.

Those knobs look nice (ooh err). Would they fit onto a standard dash?

Ummm, maybe, but they'd probably look well out of place.

They're 30mm fluted aluminium knobs and can be bought from RS if you fancy a go.
