Hello all. I'm looking to buy a 20v turbo coupe soon. Can anyone tell me how many miles the turbo functions for?
Hope you can help.
Paul.

Thanks for all replies, very interesting. One last question - if the turbo goes how much would a replacement cost?

Replacements vary in price depending on condition, you could probably get a 2nd hand standard one for £100-£150 but that would more than likely be due a refurb as it would be on it's last legs at that price. The price for a re-furb (Standard turbo with a 360° thrust bearing) from the likes of Turbo Dynamics will be around the £350 mark depending on the condition of turbo you send them. After that you start getting onto hybrid turbos and then the sky's the limit when it comes to them,so you'll be looking at £375-£???? . Baz

A standard turbo, on an unmodified car should give at least 80k miles. A well managed one can double that.
As above the 10 min idle test will sort out the smokers, regular oild changes and sympathetic driving (esp warm down) helps. Mine's on 106k on its original turbo, no blue smoke, and pulls very strongly, always warm up gently and idle/cool it all down before switching off
I'll be back Alor Blue Seat Leon FR 180 atm

Turbo failure is often caused by overfilling the oil. This blocks the oil return causing the oil to back up in the turbo shaft, and create excessive pressure in the piston ring.
That is the 2nd most common failure other than oil seal wear.

As above, mine is on 110k, with not a sign of smoke. And that is despite some good hard use on track days, as it's always been fed good oil and warmed up/ cooled down.

mine is also on original turbo 113k and counting!! works perfectly fine, touch wood!!! I was really concerned about this when I first bought a coupe. It was my first turbo car and had 92k on the clock when I bought it, and everyone warned me to check that the turbo is ok, but if your going to buy any high mileage car you have to expect that some things are just going to go eventually! I got quotes for fully refurbed turbo with uprated seals etc for approx £400.
