what ae the differences in lag, power ect between these two turbo's?

im looking to around 350bhp (ish)

of cousre supporting modds will be FMIC, Sip, Flea map, 3inch pipe, live feed ect ect

just want to know what would be the better of the two!

Someone might correct me, but this is what i think:

The GT28RS spools up quick, but i think that at 350bhp it is getting at its end.
The GT2871 is a upgrade for the GT28RS and supports up to 400 bhp + but only gets into play when you really aim over 350 bhp. Probably fastest spooling 400 bhp turbo.

The better of the two when going over 350 bhp (forged internals and stage III tuning) would be the GT2871
the better of the two when staying with std internals and not willing to pass the 330-350 bhp line should be the GT28RS.

MattM runs a RS 0.86 and Flea used to back in the day as well. You might want to ask them for their experiences. I would go for a GT28RS 0.64 with sensible boost and mapping on standard internals.

GT28RS 0.64 would be the better one for you to go for on standard internals - less lag than the 2871 0.64, which you wont be able to get the most out of at the top end with the internals restricting you.

You could also go for the GT28RS with the 0.86 housing which would be between the two, but then the limit of the internals comes into play again. if this was not a factor then the choice would be yours - bigger turbo = more lag and poorer throttle response, but more top end power at the expense of everyday driveability.

if it is for a 16VT then why not use a ballbearing cored T3.

I might have accidentally purchased a Gt2871r .64 today.

I'm hoping to run it at low boost.

I was told that this will spool quicker than the gt28rs .86 that i was running before.

I think with lowish boost and good mapping it should be ok.

P.s. Cheers marco

Blimey all these people impulse buying turbos, what happened to a Group Buy?

MattM - Ive heard of that turbo before but not that housing size, that sounds interesting.
Where did you get it from in the end, and was it a good price?

Cheers....

Also all this talk of an RS making 350bhp, there has been some in the past that have walked that, witha fullon setup.
I think my RSR is put at 320 - 340, it made 380bhp, which obviously was a suprise.

Yes apologies, i think i've got it wrong. It must be a GT2871R . 64.

Apparently there is very little mark up on turbos. A group buy will be very hard to do.

Also i needed it asap

The turbo was £939 on the website but i got a large discount, because they were overstocked.

Think i'm going to give it try, although thanks for the offer Steve.

It should spool up marginally quicker than RS did and need less boost to create the same power

I could go for this turbo, im fully forged.
Quicker spool up than an RS .86, and a large discount!
Where from please.

Although I haven't run a GT28RS .86, I know someone who has and has also been in my car (I have a GT2871r) and he commented that it was marginally more laggy. However I do have the largest compressor trim of 61 I think so find out which trim you are buying (you want the 56).

Easy - the compressor trim is 56 with a 71mm wheel, turbine is 76 trim with a 53.85mm wheel.

Did you mean that the RS was more laggy??

Sorry no the Gt2871r is more laggy and again my mistake but I think you want the 48 trim as the 56 is the largest which is what I had, not 61 (not sure where I got that from!). There are lots of different variants of the GT2871r and you have the largest.

I think this turbo may be too big for my application and standard internals.

I bought it because it was on special offer but i may send it back or sell it (anyone wanna buy) and get another Rs.

The extra i pay for the RS will save money on mapping and injectors that i'd need with the 71r.

Good idea?
