Interesting article on BBC news website following a freedom of information request for MOT test data.

Excel MOT data

Quite a bit of stuff here for me; statisically a 50/50 chance you'll pass your MOT and there were 6300 coupes on the road in so much as they made it to the testing station in 2007. No surprises brakes is the main area of pain and it will be interesting to see the attrition rate when the 2008/9 data is released.

Some very interesting numbers there.

Lights and breaks, hardly surprising I suppose!

Fascinating spreadsheet, but the one thing that really intrigued me was that there is a 2005 registered Coupe which has been tested. Who owns that one?

It seems I am beating the odds at the moment, mine has only failed the MOT once so far, about 3 years ago I think.

What it doesn't say is whether that included retests, or if it's just the results on a first sight of the vehicle.

I suspect that there were not 6300 coupes on the road, rather that there were 6300 tests done on coupes including retests.

For example the 1995 coupes show 228 passes 321 failures yet 598 failures on brakes alone.

All the figures show are that there were in fact 228 or more 1995 coupes and 549 or less of which only 228 passed their MOT.

Similarly all it really shows is that 3172 or more of our model coupes were presented and finally passed their MOT tests, with up to 3129 requiring re-tests.

It does show that there are a lot of unroadworthy coupes being used and presented for tests.

We must all do our part for the planet.
I unplugged a row of electric cars that nobody was using.
I even unplugged my own.

I interpreted the reason for failures as the number of times brakes or other generic reasons were recorded as failed - one MOT could fail for several brake reasons (corroded, worn, ineffective etc). I assume that's why the number of reasons for fail exceeds the total number of passed and failed vehicles.
My coupe failed with 5 reasons and 17 advisories!

I had the same interpretation of Simon relating to the number of failures in specific areas. I can't figure if a car which was presented for a test and failed would then be classed as both a pass and fail if it subsequently does pass, maybe there is a time limit during which a retest is not counted? Certainly for the 2005 car there is one pass and one failure, so if there is only one Coupe which was registered in 2005 it could indicate it was presented for a test, failed and then passed on a retest.

More info needed!
