hi, im new to here & needed abit of advice. i have owned my 98-r coupe about 18 months now & since buying it i have changed: brakes ball joints/bushes belts/tensioner manifold (3 nuts broke off in head) dump valve boost gauge serviced every 4-5000miles
im now at the stage where i might aswell keep it for abit as it drives realy nice now & i like it.
the thing is i have been offered the following: 3"scorpion exhaust cat back , gtech 1 chip , k&n induction kit & some -35mm lowering springs for a good price & wanted to know once i fit all this would my car actualy feel any different & would it affect reliability? would i need it mapping? & is it worth fitting a de-cat pipe & boost controler?

Blimey, welcome along HD3 3"scorpion exhaust cat back , gtech 1 chip , k&n induction kit & some -35mm lowering No need for a map if you are fitting a GTech1 The car will have a performance boost with the above. Reliability should stay the same. If you de-cat you will need to make sure that your turbo is a hybrid - better seals needed to prevent failure Boost controller - if it takes your fancy - will need mapping Mapping - forget about the Gtech if doing this, get a live map, see traders section, put it this way, many people on this forum have chosen this method. Trying to keep it short for you - get reading the threads mate and lastly, you're in the right place for your car

Patch is on the money here, the t28 in OEM form will kill its oil seals with a decat, some people get away with it for quite a while, some dont. If you dont know what your turbo is, and cant afford a rebuild, do not decat it (that of course is aside from the fact its illegal) your running more boost with a gtec expect to service the belts sooner, expect that if you have a well used clutch, it WILL push it over the edge. Patch went for a remap this week and is now due a new clutch If you have some money spare, go get it mapped by flea, my last two coupes were done and were so much nicer to drive after

it will make the ride much more harsh
£150 for a remap + a tank of fuel + getting there + RR run if you want to see the power its making
as to power, anything from 250-270 on a stock engien, there are to many variables to give any more info, needless to say she will run what she runs

i think im goin to sell the springs - just thought the rear end could of done with a drop. probably going for the remap option aswell but dont trust my clutch yet as i dont know how long its been in & i have had it 18 months - im probably better fitting gtec 1 untill clutch dies & then map after a new cluch.

I thought it was 15bhp max with a gtech1 ? The chip is plug and play BTW Also, since when did fitting a boost controller require a remap....as long as it is kept at safe boost levels for the turbo can't see the problem ?

spit,
at 1.1-1.2 bar the ecu with the stock oem controller really does struggle to stop boost spikes and fluctuations (read "see saw effect") I have a uprated controller from flea that keeps boost rock solid. Some ebv's are better than others, I suppose age of the ebv is another factor, there getting on a bit now!

Hi mate,
If you fit a boost controller I would set it to 1.1bar max or 1bar in the summer as it will be hitting the boost you set it to for as long as the turbo can flow that amount regardless of temps, revs, etc. So it's not as safe as an ebv which can cut boost if required, unless you have a wideband lambda sensor to monitor things or you get the fuelling checked to make sure its not running lean higher up the rev range.
