hi guys ,

basically my shell is a gonna, but running wise its faultless , so i thought id just reshell it i can do all the work myself so no big issue . i do have a couple of questions tho .

if i was to buy a na 16v shell would all of my 16vt parts pretty much bolt straight in , are there any structual differences , or parts that i would have to have from the na car? im assuming the 20v shells are totally different?

thanks mark

normally i'd recommend just buying a new 16vt, as it'd be hugely expensive to transplant everything. but if your going to do all the work yourself then go for it. it'd be great if you can keep up a full restoration log with pics to post up here. i'm actually kind of jealous as this is the kind of thing i'd love to do.

you should be able to pick up a cheap coop for under a grand, depending on its condition.

i'm sure you'll be able to recoup some of your losses if you buy a working transplant car for under a grand. an engine and gearbox in working order should gain you most of your cash back.

btw, what's actually wrong with the shell, is it rusted through or bent? if not, it may be just a simple question of, rust removal, a respray and a schultz underneath.

this is one of the on external areas but as you can see its pretty bad, but alot of the rust has gone right through where the front subframe bolts up and round the seat belt mounts,

the entire car is in need of a respray , i just think id be better of reshelling it

so ...16v na and 16v turbo's are the same?

Good God!

You could try someone who is breaking a coupe and get a shell from them? I'd wager it's the part of the coupe that most people who break them can't get rid of.

ok.....well a respray might be a little optimistic ooo

gunzi is right though, most shells are sold to scrap metal dealers by weight purely for the metal unless they're in demand or rare. i'm sure you would be able to pick one up somewhere.

as far as i know all models of the same year are the same body type, but i,m sure some of the more experienced forum users here could confirm or deny that.

are you still driving the car? if so, you're insurance company will probably invalidate your insurance if you have a knock. mainly because the damage is in one of the areas which give the car its structural and torsional rigidity. also the police might take you off the road and give you a ticket.

is the door closing okay? if not, then the shell may have twisted or begun to collapse.

i cant help thinking a respray is the least of your worries......

i think if you break your car, between the engine, gearbox and turbo, you should get a good amount of cash. the rest of the parts probably aren't worth so much, but should at least give you a boost.

you sound like you know what you're doing mechanically. it might be a good idea to hold onto yours for now. there's a fair chance of you picking up an engine/turbo/gearbox failure 16vt for very cheap. this way rather than reshelling your car, use it as a donor to fix up the new one. this will be much less work and money than a body swap.

once your done, break it for parts (damn, cant believe i just said that, but gotta be realistic) and try and recoup some of your lost cash.

<moderator> Of course, any 'parts wanted' or 'parts for sale' will appear in the correct sections, and *not* in this thread, right?
