16vt or 20vt eibach springs on a 20vt #997631

Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice re the above, my current lowering springs are rusting which was mentioned at my last mot. I was going to get a set of 20vt eibachs but apparently the 16vt ones are less harsh and also fit?
Also my bumper gets a lot of abuse from speed bumps and the 16vt version could be a good comprise as they don't lower the car as much as 20vt ones, is this true?

I'd appreciate any guidance on this and input from any 20vt owners with 16vt eibachs all round especially in regards to handling.

Cheers
John

Jimbo is the person to ask - pretty sure he used 16vt front springs on his Sprinty 20vt

IIRC, the 16vt Eibachs are progressive-wound, which makes them a bit softer at the start of their travel

Cheers Nigel,

yes I know he had some 16vt eibachs but I think he cut them so they were 20vt height.................

Mine is on 16vt eibachs as well. I can't say the difference in height is really that much when compared to other coupe's with the 20vt eibach springs. There might be 1cm or so in it, but hard to tell! As you can see in the 2nd picture I still managed to crack the front lip, so that 1cm didn't make the difference either tongue

Hi Don,

Yes I cut mine down by one coil, this lowered it 1cm to equal the ride height of the 20vt spring.

They are a progressive wound spring but the bottom coils sit coil bound in normal use, they only come into effect when the damper is almost at full droop.

I liked the ride with them, I found them slightly less harsh than the 20vt spring, I was running them with the Bilstein dampers but they will feel just as good with a new set of standard dampers.

I'm using 20vt Eibachs and I've not found them to be harsh in the slightest, and they're also progressively wound.

If they're progressively wound then they are the 16vt springs and probably why they aren't harsh smile

There is an obvious difference between the two types of spring, the 20vt has equal gaps between the coils, the 16vt bottom 3 coils are closer together.

Cheers guys,

I think i'll try the 16vt version then, can anybody just confirm if handling was greatly improved with them?

Cheers
John

Yes an obvious improvement in handling as long as your shocks are good. I fitted the 16vt ones to mine with a set of new Monroe shocks

can anyone tell me what the standard ride height should be on a 20vt with standard 16" wheels and 55 profiles.

Im not sure if my car had drops on it before i brought it. but looks low and other FC's have said it looks low.
