After doing loads of reading all day ive come to the conclusion that you shouldnt use a primer...or better phrased.... you dont need to use primer when using VHT or VHT Wrinkle paint. The paint is designed to adhere to the bare metal especially when designed to withstand high temps.
Its been noted in a few places that using a primer or the wrong primer will result in the paint cracking.
the reason for this is the primer may expand and contract at a different temp to that of the overlaying paint and thus cause it to come off or crack.
The recommended way is to clean the surface properly and apply the paint directly onto that.

VHT may be a bit overkill but ide rather use that than have to do it again, plus they do a wrinkle paint and its only a fiver... Your misses is going to love you john!
