Lightweight flywheel, where from? #1137528

Hi guys

My car is due for a clutch soon and at the same time would ideally like a lightweight steel flywheel but where can I source one from?

Do the Lancia delta/ alfa 156 share the same flywheel?

If one is not readily available, I guess a bit of lightening to the std flywheel is all that can be done. Does anyone know what grade steel the flywheel is, and by how much it can be lightened?

Cheers muchly for any help

Davie

what grade of steel is the standard ...that's easy it's Iron!! not steel, which limits how much can be taken off it and where.

I don't see the appeal of a lightened flywheel on a Coupe - when I fitted one, the only difference I noticed was that it was far easier to stall the car. I didn't detect any performance gain and when I had a standard item fitted, I didn't notice any performance loss (although I stopped stalling it at every other junction)

Spend your money on something else... - for example, an uprated rear ARB will make a huge difference

the only difference i notice is the engine gets easier to rev and improves response, wouldn't do it on a daily driven car though.. not really worth the harder take off especially on hills, feathering the clutch gets old fast laugh

i have lightened flywheels on a couple of cars and they are good, even for road cars.

it will depend on the extent of the lightening and the clutch used.

a lightened flywheel wont prvide additional power per se' but it will allow the car a faster response, so could make it considerably faster.

i would have thought that all the fast boys here would love a faster car with an inexpensive mod like the flywheel (especially if done at clutch change) after all the money that is spent on eeking out the last few bhp.

of course there are downsides, significant lightening and heavy clamping can result in a sudden deceleration, as can the decreased inertia force when you hit an incline.

On balance id see a lightened flywheel as no brainer but of course everyone is different

Everyone has their own style of driving. As a daily driver though a lightened FW takes a bit of getting used to. When my engine was out last year I had the offer of a lightened FW. Far from being an expert although I had some knowledge how these work, I was tempted. I did more enquiries & in the end decided against, mainly down to the very fact that the guys I spoke to who had done FW mostly said the same, great for the track, but a daily driver it became a bit of a pain.

Then again the speed merchants on here will make up their own minds. Worth having a try before you buy if you can. I only managed to be a passenger, & as pointed out, very jerky, on/off.

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

My tuned coupe had a lightened flywheel. I've not idea how much difference it made as it was part of a lot of mods that were done at the same time.

I noticed no difference at all in everyday driving. smile

depends on what you call lightened, mine was 4.5kg lighter and i really noticed the side effects, takes a bit getting used to.. with a paddle clutch it'll be a different story though, it will only agravate the well known problems..

then again a thema is a bit heavier then a coupe which doesn't help either..

Maybe this will help you make a decision, from quite a well respected engine builder. I haven't read through this myself for years admitidly.

http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/FLYWHEEL.htm

I have run an extremly light FW on an uno turbo, and the mythical side effects were minimal tbh. Much outwheighed by the super fast throttle response. cool

Just be VERY aware that you can go too far

Youtube video of an exploding flywheel

Check out where the bits go - the driver is lucky to have kept his feet - several Mini drivers have lost bits of limbs from flying shrapnel after their lightened cast flywheel has disintegrated

This on its own will be un noticeable, however its rare anyone will go to the expense of doing such a job and actually admit that it didn't do anything.

However i am a big fan that lots of little things can make a big difference.

Lightening that we do is a series of holes drilled.
Not much is taken off.The balancing part is more crucial.
But only crucial if the whole bottom end including the clutch is balanced simultaneously

O.k. I spent the money, but I can notice a difference.

Went with a Fidanza billet alloy unit with insert - weight was 3.4kg from memory down from over 10kg for OE unit. My car isn't a daily driver so less worried about stop start traffic where you can notice the lighten version in getting the car moving from a stand still, means feathering the clutch alot more - reserving up a steep driveway when it's cold can be fun but otherwise it revs more quickly. I read that Puma Racing article and was sold, my car is used on the circuit so ever bit counts

Yip sure is - billet alloy and steel friction surface - some don't like them due to the different rates of expansion of steel and alloy but I have no trouble in the last few years it has been fitted - both road and some track days.

http://www.fidanza.com/Aluminum-Flywheels.aspx

if you download the lancia 16v grale and fiat coupe 16vt share the same part, but don't think they do a 20vt part but maybe someone does

Is the 16vt flywheel the same as 20vt, also what about integrale flywheels are they able to be installed?

No, they are not the same. Clutch is though.

Cheers Begbie!

So can we fit Integrale clutches to the 20vt aswell, or are they a different type? ie push or pull

Titanium is a very brittle metal unless it's an alloy with something else, I'm not sure how it would cope with being a clutch face?

Weight is 4.55 kg.
Seems same as my Alfa 156 2.0TS, but i must measure it later to confirm.
