I don't have the powers to make this a separate thread, but it probably should be:

What are people doing about recovery policies?

I am mindful of Joe's experience a couple of years back, and I have not been able to find a single recovery policy which will recover the vehicle itself, if, in the opinion of the recover company, the cost of the recovery is greater than the value of the vehicle or the cost of the repairs.

Gentlemen, as far as the world is concerned we drive rusty old scruffy Italian cars and in many cases the book value of the cars is only a grand, or even less.

Has anyone found a policy which will guarantee recovery of the vehicle to either home or a selected specialist in the case of severe damage?

Perhaps we could persuade one of our coupe-friendly companies to consider this?

Mine is covered on the annual european breakdown cover I took out through Neil Willies last year.

If I do have a problem, my argument will be the coupe's value is the agreed value on the insurance policy.

This is more than the likely cost of repatriation.

That ambiguous statement is far from confidence inspiring Mario! "Some" people "probably" have it.

I implore all to check!!

Euro recovery with Green Flag - but the question is... does the car come home? A flat tyre probably exceeds the book value of mine, as it's cat C.

Recovery or repair, it is all the same to the breakdown people. It's money and they will go for the cheapest option left to themselves.

If they think they can get away with the vehicle being valued at the same price as a bag of cold sick, they will. That is roughly the value that mainstream insurers place on the car.

However if you have agreed value insurance in place, they will find it hard to argue that the cost of repair or recovery is greater than the insured value of the car.

Hello everyone

Just to clear this up, as long as you have a motor insurance policy with us via Classic Line which you have paid the additional charge to include European Breakdown Cover then I confirm, the policy is in the first instance designed to keep you and your party mobile during the journey or holiday abroad, it is what is says a breakdown policy. It does not cover the costs of parts and only provides breakdown cover where the vehicle cannot be driven as a result of a mechanical or electrical breakdown, failure or breakage, which results in you not being able to drive the car.

If the car cannot be repaired at the roadside/scene of the breakdown then the cover will arrange and pay for the reasonable cost to take the car, yourself and upto 4 passengers from the place where the vehicle broke down to the nearest garage.

If the car cannot be repaired at the roadside or the garage during the same day then the cover will provide the refund of costs to take the vehicle, you and upto 4 passengers to any one place you choose.

There are various exclusions and policies limits and you need to read your documents carefully and be aware of these. The cover is limited to an absolute maximum of £3000 in any one year/policy and you need to read the policy to understand exactly how/where this is limited and what is covered exactly and more importantly what is not.

You will know if you have this cover because you would of been issued with a breakdown certificate/schedule and the European Cover box will be highlighted. All policies have UK Breakdown as standard, so you need to check carefully which cover is in force.

full policy wording below

http://www.fiatcoupeclub.org/documents/classicline_motor_breakdown.pdf

Hope this helps

Thanks
Sarah

Those that are attending Spa and are concerned as to whether you have this cover or not, please contact me either via email or PM with your full name, vehicle registartion number and I will happily check your policy and see if you have the cover etc.

I will be looking at providing quotations for Track Day Cover as well if anyone is considering this, again PM or email me

Thanks
Sarah

Are you able to provide the European Breakdown Recovery on an ad-hoc basis, Sarah, to people otherwise insured?

Also, what would Track Day Cover, er, cover?

Thanks,

Neil

The European Breakdown policy refered to above is only offered as an extension of a particular motor policy we sell.

We do arrange seperate Breakdown Cover which does not need to be attached to a policy, but when I enquired last year we found that the policy was very similar to what Joe had experienced where the cover/costs were limited by the market value of the car.

In respect of Track Day Cover this is a policy which provides Accidental Damage Cover Only for the car whilst it is on the track. So should you have an motor accident on the track cover is provided for your car, any car doesn't have to be a Fiat Coupe, upto a certain specified value, however the policy is subject to a minimum £1000 Excess, so in the majority of cases the overall cover is going to be fairly low in view of the excess.

The Club arrange seperate Liability Cover for any damage caused to the track etc, further details of this can be obtained from Pete

PM or email me should you wish to enquire about the AD Cover or Breakdown Cover.

Joe I could arrange it if you wanted to take out a motor policy for the car(s)you were taking to Spa and would then extend to provide European Breakdown as detailed, but I am sure you don't want to go to this expense.

I know it's easily said. BUT if you are going to track your beloved coupes hard (which is hard to resist) you have to be prepaired for something breaking at sometime. If you dont or cant pay for additional cover, well you know the risk. We just cant have it all our way, unless you dig deep in the pocket.
Maintain your coupe, ready for track and a long drive and then you have a great chance of being trouble free.
