Just wondering, if you had a car that could do (humour me here) 300mph and you were allowed to go as fast as you liked on a motorway (lets call it motorway one, special event, closed to all other traffic, you have the freedom of the road).

How fast would you go before you backed off.

Bearing in mind that if you did have a blowout/mechanical failure/suicidal pigeon you might end up being very dead.

Depends on conditions, car ect. I don't think any one could honestly answer unless they were in the car and had a few runs.

You could equally end up dead following the above at 60mph...

I've been up to a whisker shy of 170mph on an empty dual-carriageway and by that speed things really did feel rather fast, and that was on a bike, which effectively makes the road much wider.

In a car I doubt I'd want to go much faster. I think I'd take it to 200, just for the brag-factor, but I can't imagine wanting to go much beyond that.

Just as a point of interest - if the Highway Code had the bottle to list stopping distances up to 300mph it would be about 0.9 miles, so you might want to make sure you've got your best glasses on before you try to join the triple-ton club.

If you have the freedom of the road and it's straight, i would say upto 250mph maybe.

Knowing this forum's stance on such things, can we please avoid talking about what illegal speeds we may have got up to - including on any, nudge nudge not convincing anyone, 'private track'

If we can't then the key-janglers will be along

Sorry, Mark, my post contained a typo, which I've now corrected.

I hope this now meets with forum rules smile

I think it's more interesting going around corners. Taking "Coppice" at Cadwell flat out in my car takes some cajones - it will do it(just!). The biggest problem is people in front often lift which leaves you on the ragged edge of adhension with no road!

It's all down to familiarity - 140 is pretty quick and I've done it a few times (although usually in the wide-open spaces of an airfield)

However, for some reason, 150+ seems to be disproportionately faster and 160+ is scary

However, if I was firmly strapped into a car with known crash-resistance and good (proven) dynamics, I would imagine I'd keep my foot down until at least 250

Will agree with that, I once had a 80 mph pigeon smash into the widscreen in line with my eyes.

It destroyed the entire screen with a 3" dent where it actually hit.
It shook up the biker who was following me pretty badly: The remains just missed his visor.

Not the coupe but a company Montego I once had.

On an airfield day I drove the C4S up to an indicated 170mph. The wind noise was astonishing and the merest input on the steering wheel, intended or not, had an exaggerated output. There was no way a dab of oppo would have saved anyone if something had gone wrong.

I don't mind admitting it was bloody scary and not something I'm in a rush to repeat. I'm not generally bothered about three-figure speeds. It's the throwing around the twisties at well under a tonne that's fun. Any idiot can pin the right hand pedal to the floor and anyone who thinks he's Billy-Big-B****cks for doing so should be avoided at all cost.

If I had a few runs I reckon I'd push it most of the way.. just work up to it before hand I think, see how it felt.
