So who's seen the full trailer for Ridley Scott's Prometheus?

I must admit, part of me thinks it looks awesome, while another (more rational) part worries that, like Avatar, it's going to be a case of multi-million-dollar-effects-budget and 27p spent on script writing.

Number one daughter is keen to see it, though, and since my wife has taken her to see all of the Twishite films I suppose the least I can do is take a risk on this one.

I saw some earlier teaser type trailers and stills for this afew month ago, and I thought it looked great....and the new trailer still looks superb...

...i'm just worried about the 'glossy cast', sometimes these films are more 'believable' with lesser known actors...Charlize Theron is just too good looking to take seriously (IMO) laugh

Story first. CGI/3D/Whatever LAST. I would rather watch a film with an amazing story but rubbish SFX than watch a film with a rubbish story

I don't think Hollywood shares his feelings.

Thinking about films in general I'd tend to agree, but I do think that effects are very important for a sci-fi film.

Every other genre can get away with a small fx budget, even horror - where there are some amazing films made on no budget at all - but with sci-fi it's just wrong.

Mind you, now I've started thinking about it I've got The American Astronaut stuck in my head. For those who haven't seen this epic mash of batshit insane story and hand-drawn-by-an-8-year-old special effects here's the plot summary for Wkipedia.

Originally Posted By: Wikipedia
Space travel has become a dirty way of life dominated by derelicts, grease monkeys, thieves, and hard-boiled interplanetary traders such as Samuel Curtis (Cory McAbee), an astronaut from Earth who deals in rare goods, living or otherwise.

His mission begins with the unlikely delivery of a cat to a small outer-belt asteroid saloon where he meets his former dance partner, and renowned interplanetary fruit thief, the Blueberry Pirate (Joshua Taylor). As payment for his delivery of the cat, Curtis receives a homemade cloning device already in the process of creating a creature most rare in this space quadrant — a Real Live Girl.

At the suggestion of the Blueberry Pirate, Curtis takes the Real Live Girl to Jupiter where women have long been a mystery. There, he proposes a trade with the owner of Jupiter: the Real Live Girl clone for the Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman’s Breast (Gregory Russell Cook). The Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman’s Breast is regarded as royalty on the all-male mining planet of Jupiter because of his unique and exotic contact with a woman. It is Curtis’ intention to take The Boy to Venus and trade him for the remains of Johnny R., a man who spent his lifetime serving as a human stud for the Southern belles of Venus, a planet populated only by women. Upon returning Johnny R’s body to his bereaved family on earth, Curtis will receive a handsome reward.

While hashing out the plan with the Blueberry Pirate, Curtis is spotted by his nemesis, Professor Hess (Rocco Sisto). Possessed by an enigmatic obsession with Curtis, Hess is capable of killing only without reason; that is, unless his intended victim is someone with whom he has unresolved issues. Hess has been pursuing Samuel Curtis throughout the solar system in order that he might forgive him, then kill him. Along the way, Hess has executed each and every individual to come into contact with Curtis.

Unaware of this danger, Curtis sets forth on his mission.

After retrieving The Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman’s Breast from Jupiter, Curtis is contacted by Professor Hess, who makes his intentions known.

Fearful, Curtis and The Boy look for a place to hide. They come across a primitive space station constructed by Nevada State silver miners from the late 1800s. Inside they discover a small group of miners still alive, their bodies crippled and deformed by space atrophy. Unable to return home for fear that Earth’s gravity would kill them, two of the miners mated and give birth to a boy known as Body Suit (James Ransone). He has been raised in a suit of hydraulics to simulate Earth's gravity with his parent's intention of him eventually being sent home. In trade for supplies and sanctuary, Curtis agrees to deliver Body Suit to Earth.

Once they land on the lush planet of Venus, the terrain dramatically changes, and Curtis is inspired by a plan.

Although even that doesn't do justice to how crazy this film is. The day Hollywood creates a blockbuster version of this is the day that they've finally used up every other idea on the planet.

Well looks like a highly polished film, as can expected from a huge hollywood budget. I prefer my sci-fi a little more gritty such as in District9, but I will admit to looking forward to this film.
He is one director who knows how to create suspense and ramp it up to insane levels ( anybody remember the autogun scenes ?).
ETA:
That film sounds utterly bonkers. I think ill try and get hold of a copy!

I'd argue that a science fiction film is one in which, if the science is removed, the plot fails. There are very few of them, but of those few, the SFX are not what make them.

Are there really that few of them where the science is integrale to the plot?

More importantly, how many of them don't have good special effects?

The only one that springs immediately to mind, for me, is Primer.

But, and it's a big 'but', I'm not saying that the special effects make any science fiction film, just that the lack of special effects can ruin them.

Except Ridley Scott directed Alien, without sentry guns, which was in the one directed by James Cameron. smile

Him and me both. Though you have to wonder where the science went when it turns out they've forgotten that plants need light... solved of course in Dark Star: Fiat Lux!

One good SF film with no need of SFX is Gattaca.

In complete agreement with you there. Also enjoyed the (visually) similarly styled Equilibrium, although that did have a comparatively large budget.

The Matrix is a pretty good action film, ruined by increasingly up-their-own-arse sequels.

@Barnacle - yep, with you on that one, Gattaca is good science fiction.

I went to see this the other day but it's left me with even more questions instead of answering question about the first Alien film.

First off, I thought it was fantastic, special effects or whatever you call them these days are just incredible, I didn't go to see the 3D version, I'm not keen on that thing so I'm not sure what the extra dimension adds to the film?

So my questions;
Why did the 'engineer' alien chap purposefully swallow the gloop at the beginning of the film if he knew it would destroy him? Was this a sacrifice to create new life on the planet as a type of seeding? I'm guessing that's why it showed the DNA restructuring?

What is the difference between the gloop he drank and the black gloop that came out of the canisters?

What were the worm/snake things, did they come from in the canisters or something else that had mutated from the black gloop?

Why, if the engineers had created life on earth did they now want to destroy it?

Clearly setting the scene for a sequel, I look forward to it.

Yes he did, the big unanswered question is why they changed their minds and wanted to destroy us, that's why she continues her search for their planet!

Good film!

Ahhhh, Sorry Stan. Actually I haven't really spoilt anything there, it may even help you figure out what the hells going on, anyway, I'm pretty easily confused, I made a similar post after watching the Lion King.

I wouldn't worry about it Jim, I won't be going out to see it anyway, I *might* watch it when it comes on normal telly in 18 mths time, but that's about it.

Oh, and if it's scary, then I won't be watching it at all! box

I was thoroughly disappointed with it. I haven't yet worked out whether that's because I had such high hopes or whether it's because it was abject shite.

As for changing their minds...
Click to reveal..
...there's a lot of conjecture on the internet. The one that seems to stand up is that Jesus was one of the engineers sent to us to try to give humanity some order and we crucified him so they became a little peeved. The ship they find on the planet was destined to sanitise earth, but one of the aliens got out, which is why you see the Engineer team running away into the big head room.

It seems a bit far fetched, but when you consider all the less-than-subtle biblical references in the film it kinda makes sense (from a story perspective, not actually making sense.)

"2000 years ago" is referred to a few times. The woman who can't conceive giving birth at Christmas. The Engineer sacrificing himself. The carving of an Alien on the door with arms outstretched. The android washing Weyland's feet...

From what I remember, there's no reference in the bible to Jesus being an 8ft tall Dulux whiter shade of pale dude so that doesn't quite add up but I can see how it would fit in with the story.

I think the directors cut may be the better film to watch should it ever come out? This one seemed a little too bitty with too many unexplained situations.

As a film on its own it does not hold water, we went to watch it last week and I felt like asking for my money back.
As a film compared to the first 3... Yes I said 3 as we don't talk about the 4th, it was terrible. None of the charicters were indeering, I didn't root for any of then to live. I felt it was predictable and pandering to future sequels.
