As my cyclocross bike has been discounted at just the right time I have a spare £190 to spend on kit. I need a decent helmet and some SPD shoes to go with pedals I have already.

So what would people get and what else should i be looking for? The only catch Its has to come from Hellfrauds.

Halfords have Topeak pumps.
You'll need one of the "road" ones.
Other than that,
Mudguards, cycling shorts, lights, overshoes, track pump, spare chain, speedo, spare tubes, puncture repair kit, decent tyres.
Shame it has to be Halfrauds. Your money would go much further at Wiggle or Chainreaction or Ribble or Tredz.

Helmet fit is very individual - Giro fit me very well - Specialized don't. Same, to a great extent with shoes - Shimano are good.

Check on-line prices though - some big deals on right now.

Guards - SKS Chromoplastics if they do them - best for the Boardman CX.
Track pump - get the Joe Blow

Honestly, though, there's hardly anything that Halfrauds stock that I'd buy

Socket set?

And, if you have bought a Boardman CX, order a rear derailleur hanger - when I needed one, I had to wait 6 weeks!

Yes its a boardman cx. Interesting about the rear hanger out of interest how much was the hanger.

The topeak joe blow sport 2 seems to get good reviews so was probably goint to go for that. Was looking at giro savant helmets today and will prob get shimano spd shoes. Still have a round £30 to spend. Dont think its worth spend that much on lights so will leave that until a later date. Maybe some tools...something bike related.

The hanger costs about a tenner.

£30 is about what a the mudguards would cost. If you're using it for commuting, they are well worthwhile to keep your feet and butt dry on wet roads.

The Boardman used to have issues with the bottom bracket bearings not being lubricated though I think that's sorted now. Headsets sometimes work loose too. Worth checking the state (alignment) of the rim tape if you have the tyres off at any point

Buy a 2nd hand spare bike so your pit crew can clean your best bike when it's weight is doubled after a couple of laps.

One other thing Halfords sell is Cateye speedos and they tend to hold roughly the same price online.
I have tried 3 cheaper supermarket alternatives and they throw up issues like not resisting moisture, losing their configuration when you go over bumps, and one couldn't sense speeds above 25 mph. Something like a Velo Wireless is fine.

Also on the pump, you also need a portable one that can put at least 100 psi into the tyres or you'll get pinch flats after you fix a puncture. The Topeak ones have adjustment at the valve and a thin barrel so you can push these higher pressures in without losing air at the valve.

Thanks for the suggestions. It seems Halfords have 3 for 2 on accessories (helmets/locks/pumps/lights/etc) so my cash will be going a little bit further which is nice.

MRS - are these the mud guards you were referring to? are these the correct size?

Skinflint - any suggestions on a mini pump. I do have a Topeak mini pump on my Cannondale MTB which looks like this one....

To be fair to halfords if I have priced up everything correct with the offers available I will be getting around £300 worth of stuff for my £190 so not bad.

Will see what they say later when I go into the shop to finalise the order.

What width are the tyres? 35mm refers to the width of the guard and I don't think will fit a 35mm tyre but I don't remember what size tyres the CX comes with. If you're using them for commuting, I'd swap the tyres to a road tyre (25 or 28mm) in which case the 35mm guards are perfect.

A really great pump is the Topeak Road Morph. I tend to use CO2 these days and only carry a micro pump for disasters.

That looks absolutely fine. I believe all the Topeaks made for road bikes work OK. It is the supermarket lookalikes that'll leave you stranded. They're good for the money but made for mountain bikes.

Yes the CX has 35mm tyres as standard. Would a wider 45mm guard fit the frame do you think?

Yes - I'm pretty sure they do. I think I made the mistake of getting 35mm myself the first time around.

Sorry, missed this thread earlier. As another CX Team owner, I'd recommend upgrading the tyres, the originals are paper thin and after countless punctures I fitted Schwalbe Land Cruisers 700x35c, but Halfords don't have a very wide range of tyres. I've also fitted Tortec reflector mudguards, 40mm wide and they cover the tyres perfectly.
