It all depends. How long would a corroded/pitted bearing last? A lot depends on storage conditions and whether the internals had either a protective coating or lubricant. Bearings may not be corroded/pitted at all, but may have brinelled due to lack of shaft rotation and the effects of gravity, with shafts remaining in the same position. That said, risk may be low as the shafts aren't all that heavy. Of as much concern would be seal condition. Gearbox seals are usually nitrile rubber and have variable shelf life depending on storage/usage. If exposed to UV (i.e. sunlight/daylight) the seals will break down quicker, than if stored in the dark. A new 15 year old crated gearbox should be stripped and thoroughly checked, with new bearings and seals fitted if appropriate, upon rebuild. You should do the same with an old, but supposedly good gearbox, in any case. Only main difference then is going to be the condition of the gears. In that regard, I'd rather have the new, but old, crated gearbox.
