Come across a Crated Fiat Coupe 6 speed box "Brand new" on the internet!
Just wondered what they are worth?
It could of course be a scam etc.
Any opinions?

Also found lots of bits and bobs always different countries!
But seem a bit steep in price! but then perhaps in another 10 years or so when Brand new parts will be very hard to get (even harder than now) may be worth the amount!
Im just curious thats all not looking to sell anything etc.

Cheers Rich

IMHO, not much more than a good used example. Remember it won't be 'new'. It'll likely have been manufactured many years ago which means seals could be dry and corrosion may have formed.

As far as i can tell its brand new still in wooden crate looks brand new is listed as brand new etc
Asking price is more than i would be prepared to pay even though im after a 6 speed box!
And i would be just as happy with a decent used one as opposed to a brand new one!

You can still get them from Fiat for around €2500 euro.

You misunderstand my point. I think it'll be new in the sense that it hasn't been used. But when do you think that they manufactured that gearbox, and its components? Remembering that the Coupé went out of production nearly 15 years ago.

I would trust a new one a lot more than a used one.

It all depends. How long would a corroded/pitted bearing last?

A lot depends on storage conditions and whether the internals had either a protective coating or lubricant. Bearings may not be corroded/pitted at all, but may have brinelled due to lack of shaft rotation and the effects of gravity, with shafts remaining in the same position.

That said, risk may be low as the shafts aren't all that heavy. Of as much concern would be seal condition. Gearbox seals are usually nitrile rubber and have variable shelf life depending on storage/usage. If exposed to UV (i.e. sunlight/daylight) the seals will break down quicker, than if stored in the dark.

A new 15 year old crated gearbox should be stripped and thoroughly checked, with new bearings and seals fitted if appropriate, upon rebuild. You should do the same with an old, but supposedly good gearbox, in any case.

Only main difference then is going to be the condition of the gears. In that regard, I'd rather have the new, but old, crated gearbox.

Hi Szkom yeah i understand your point, but im with Kayjey it should be ok unless it has been stored in a very damp environment

When we fit gearboxes at work its quite normal for them to be stored on the shelf for a number of years before use (not sure about 15 though) they are dry stored too!

Anyway this post was purely out of interest as there is no way i would be willing to pay that much for a new one, i have a number of priorities and a "Brand new" gearbox is not one of them lol
Cheers for the comments though
