Whilst the Coupe is being restored, I thought I'd get a summer runabout. Something practical, economical and preferably Italian.
Here it is!

Don't be too jealous. It looks fabulous and it's certainly got a great engine, but it doesn't have the everyday usability or anonymous fun factor of the Coupe. Strangely it feels more old-fashioned, although it's a newer car. So no plans to make it a permanent replacement. Good toy though laugh

Details please!

Having just chopped in a Discovery 3 which cost a fortune to keep running, even I'm scared of the running costs of these!

It's a 2002 3200 GT Automatic. One of the last 3200s built, it has the electronic dampers which firm up the ride in Sport mode, which also tweaks the gearshift points. It currently has a Larini sport exhaust which I gather is much prized among the Maseratisti; it's pretty loud in town and my wife refuses to drive it until it's quieter! Acceleration is pretty similar to 2nd gear in the Coupe - except that it's available at all speeds! Twin roller bearing turbos, no lag at all that I can feel so far. Petrol station necessary every other mile. Servicing costs - don't even think about it shocked

Lovely! Will be very interested to hear how you get on. Got anymore pictures you can post of the car?

What's the plan for the exhaust?

Update: after a few weeks driving, I can report that it does have turbo lag after all - you can briefly bog down if pulling away at low revs. It''s not really a town car - it feels grumpy below 40mph or so, and tickover is about 30 rolleyes. On the open road it's just getting going at the legal limit. Overtaking is what it was made for, with a solid turbo shove like that of the Coupe, but never-ending. The motor likes to rev more as well, over 4000 it really wakes up. Fuel consumption seems to be about 17mpg shocked.

Start driving it properly then.... When I had one on loan, I struggled to get it to 15mpg

I know what you mean about the old-fashioned feel though - quite a 'lazy' car, despite the feeling of constant thrust. Not helped by the proper auto-box, but the manual is a dog - way too much driveline backlash and a proper pain in town

Watch out for the traction control - its very crude and you're well sideways before it intervenes

I may have been generous about the 17 mpg wink. Traction control light flickers on quite often, even in the dry. In the wet I've had one big wiggle under medium acceleration in a straight line! Not dared turn the TC off...

ISTR that the traction control (at least on the early models) only cut in when one rear wheel was going faster than the other - if BOTH were spinning, it didn't care....

The ones I drive were certainly very lairy in the wet AND they had the original fly-by-wire throttle mapping - most have been remapped now, as the original was way too sensitive

I think they improved quite a few things on the post-2001 cars. The throttle is certainly sensitive, but not horribly so, and the auto box obviously helps to slug it a bit. The traction control is quite interventionist too, but I'm going to put some decent tyres on it before being at all enthusiastic - it currently has cheapo horrors on all round shocked.

Didn't cheapo tyres + mas badge = run away at purchase stage? It would have put me off!!

I'm looking at the new quatropotre at the minute and the depreciation is massive, 08 plates from 16k!! Its the service parts costs that scare me.

Have you bought, looked at, tried to get parts yet??

Actually the tyres are the only duff thing about it. It has a huge service history file and is in very good condition. I don't understand the mindset that skimps on tyres when you're trying to control 370bhp. And good tyres aren't even that expensive when you compare them with everything else it consumes. Yes, parts prices are terrifying, but I don't plan on doing much mileage in it, and if you can find the generic Bosch/Magneti Marelli etc. part, then it's normal price of course. And the great thing about deprecation is that it's made it affordable now! As a new buy, it would be very silly.

This is interesting as a guy at work's brother-in-law has just bought a Manual 3200GT and is regretting it. Apparently the throttle is very digital and he's already looking to swap it for an automatic 4200GT to make it more driveable. I'll ask if he's had it remapped and what tyres it's got but if the manual really is that much of a pig then maybe it's best that he just sell it on.

Sounds like these cars are more aggro than they're worth and, in the scheme of things, not even that fast, especially nowadays...

When I was loaned a pair of 3200GTs (an auto for two weeks, then a manual for another two weeks), I wrote a review for the forum

Good bits first.

Glorious, tuneful and VERY powerful engine.

Smooth.

Decent auto gearbox.

Nice interior (but not if it's cream leather with burgundy suede headlining [Freak] ).

Can seat four (well two plus two anyway).

Looks different.

Bad bits.

NASTY, nasty, nasty throttle. Its fly-by-wire and waaaaaay too sensitive and light. Can't even feel the pedal below your foot.

Even nastier traction control. Fine if only one wheel is spinning, but sooo easy to light up both tyres, even in the dry. Absolutely lethal in the wet, when it's difficult to pull away from standstill without spinning the tyres due to the crappy over-sensitive throttle.

Car was obviusly built to be an auto. Three pedals only just fit in the footwell. The footrest is about 4cm wide, and your foot rests on the clutch pedal too. With trainers on, when I press the clutch, my shoe touches the footrest AND the brake pedal. Can't be driven wearing large shoes or boots. Turn your foot sideways and you can press all three pedals.

Dead feel to the steering, clutch, gearbox.

Slow gearchange (which may be down to having only done 400 miles).

Dodgy electrics already. First car I had, the clock either gained or lost 3 hours A DAY!. Electric seats occasionally move completely forward whilst parked up. Current car's radio has never worked (only done 400 miles). Also a piece of wiring loom has dangled out of the dash and touches my leg. My ten year old son got his fingers trapped between the seat and the rails while trying to move the seat.

Rattles like a six year old Coop, not a brand new Italian supercar.

Lots of backlash in the drivetrain. LandRover Discovery style clunking on clumsy gearchanges (which is nearly all of them with THAT throttle).

15mpg average [Eek!]

I could sum it up by saying that although the Maserati is stupendously powerful, it is not fast (other than in a straight line).

Give me a bendy A road, and I would have been LOADS faster in my old 20VT. Add a little rain and I reckon I could go faster in a normally aspirated Coupe. It really does feel that remote.

And before anyone says that I can't handle a powerful rwd car, when I got my 355, within two days I could stuff it into a corner, get a bit of understeer, then use the throttle to hold it either neutral or provoke a little oversteer. The 355 is beautifully balanced and you can feel it. The 3200GT is probably as nicely balanced, but you just don't feel attached to what the chassis or the tyres are doing.

Sorry if this bursts your bubble. You may absolutely love the car- just make sure you get a long (half-day?) test drive. Try manual AND auto. If I HAD to live with one, I'd have the auto, simply because the manual is so bad.

Its crap. Sorry.

OK, it ain't total crap, but I would be well pi55ed if I'd just spent £65,000.

If I wanted luxury and pace, I'd buy a second hand Jag XJR (not even an XKR), and spend the change on a Ferrari 348.

355 should be back by the weekend, or early next week. Counting the hours.

In hindsight, I was probably being overly harsh. I still think they are gorgeous cars and I'm pretty sure that the ownership experience will be made more bearable by the strong following they have, and a number of good independent garages

I know that the throttle was a very common whinge and that it has been modified by most owners to remove the hair-trigger response

God knows what it must be like to drive on budget tyres - I found it extremely wayward on brand new P-Zeros

For some reason, I still fancy a manual Assetto Corsa...

Ha, I remember reading Nigel's review of his temporary 3200 several years ago, and at the time it was pretty disappointing. Can't say I disagree with the broad gist of it though - and if I'd just paid £65k for a new one, especially a manual, I too would have been cheesed off. But as a £10k proposition now, it's one hell of a lot of car for the money. What hasn't changed is that it's utterly gorgeous. The auto box probably suits the engine & throttle better than the manual. It definitely is that quick. Steering and ride are both nice IMO. And I reckon it has every chance of being a decent investment if I can keep it in tyres and fuel. But strangely, it underscores what a fantastic all-rounder the Coupe is. I remember reviews saying the Fiat had a baby-supercar feel to it, and it does but with a surprising dose of practicality too.

Are the parts more generic than with late 80's / early 90's. I have a mate with a 430 and most parts are hell or wallet death, im sure rear discs were 500 quid for tye rough casting and needed to be faced! And a rear window 1/4 light was many 100's too!

I guess its part of the beast, tbh I'm not sure id be brave enough to buy one. Much respect and keep us posted on how it goes!
