I have tried twice now and still don't see the fuss. Expensive and fiddly to prepare. The taste just does not seem to justify the effort.

I completely agree. The smaller the "prawn" the more the flavour so the best to eat are those fiddly little grey shrimp the Europeans seem to love.

Brown crab, on the other hand, are always delicious, although, again, a little fiddly to pick. Maybe there's a theme here: you have to work for good food.

I agree also.

I did some fishing off the coast of Scotland a few years back and the guy gave us 3 lobsters the size of a bin lid .

I freed the ones he gave me as couldn't bring myself to boil alive such a beautiful creature, who probably gave an unsuspecting swimmer quite a pinch the following day.

A lot of fuss for something that tasted like birds eye fish fingers .

I should point out here that I lied in the other lobster thread - I don't like it at all. Also, any food that requires you to wear an apron is probably going wrong somewhere.

Heh.

On a six hour layover in Miami, years ago, we abandoned the airport and went down-town to find something to eat. Anita is into eating things with more than the regulation number of legs and/or exoskeletons, so she decided on lobster.

All went well until she got to the final claw, which refused to open until she got really quite aggressive with it - at which point it exploded and distributed its contents all over the table... and the back of the chap on an adjacent table.

We left before he discovered...

Went on holiday with my then girlfriend and her best mate, my girlfriend and I both hate fish etc. but her friend loves them but is real squeamish! While she was screaming at trying to crack open the thing my girlfriend and I were retching
She got the waiter to do it for her in the end

Probably one of my worst dining experiences ever!!
Great holiday though! hehe

Lobster cooked well can be excellent. Cooked badly, it is chewy and tasteless. It is all in the actual cooking. Whether it is worth the outlay, I'm not totally convinced ...

I used to live on a tiny island in the south atlantic and we used catch out own lobster. We'd cook out and have lobster and chips washed down with beer. It was great. Catching and cooking my own fresh lobster (caught minutes earlier) was very nice and it was always tasty; I don't think much of the lobster you can buy in the UK is as good, it's fairly bland by comparison. I think you'd need to spend a lot to get good lobster in a city.
But it's like anything, if it's not to your taste, that's fine.
