I was interested to hear the guy on R4 today who somewhat debunked the myth that "fewer than" was correct in some circumstances (can't be bothered to list them) rather than "less than". He said somebody made up the rule and that "less than" has been used for at least 1000 years. I'm glad he said that because I like language to be correct where it helps precision of meaning but this rule added nothing.
