Good evening folks

Can you fit a 6 speed manual gearbox into a 5 speed car? Is it a direct replacment or does it require lots of re-engineering?

Kind regards,

DS

From what I've heard, no, not easily, but I know it has been done.

I believe it entails changing the steering rack but someone will come along and elaborate...

As far as I’m aware it’s a straight swap assuming you have a later style 5 speed box with the 2 cables

If you have the 3 cable system I think it can still be swapped but you need to swap out the cables and that which involves dropping the transmission tunnel etc. Perfectly doable but a little more involved

I’ve only really seen the early style boxes on the p reg coupes, anything after that I think you’ll be fine. Easy to check, just remove the battery and battery tray

The aircon drier filter needs moved slightly otherwise the 6 speed box can end up rubbing a hole in it. That was the only problem I remember from the one coupe I know of that had this conversion done.

I had the 5-speed box swapped for a 6-speed in my old Sprint Blue

Although I didn't do the swap (Motormech did it), I believe it was pretty much a straight swap with no problems

Transformed the car too, as it made top-gear cruising a bit less frantic (which was useful, as I was doing 30,000+ miles a year in it)

Not really, I’ve got 2 6 speeds here BUT there is a caveat.

Both were removed from non runners (the rustiest cars I’ve seen) and are both subsequently untested. One has an indicated 93k and the other 110k

I don’t doubt that (plus I’m a skinflint, so that makes the job even more interesting L) )

Thanks for all the replies!
