Well, it would be rude not to...

1. Rosso
2. Barnacle
3. DaveG

What could possibly go wrong? Well, last time it was arriving at Dover with one wrong passport, breaking down and abandoning the Coupe at the St Bernard Pass, paying a small fortune to get the Coupe recovered back to Turin, and having an accident on the way back in Antwerp...but highlights were the 2 days in Turin and Parco Valentino, plus visits to Fiat Centro Storico, the National Automobile Museum, pininfarina and the Heritage Hub (all in Turin) and the Abarth Museum in Belgium...

Sounds interesting- went to Milan in 2010 for the Alfa Centenary which was excellent. Could well be tempted with this. Look forward to more details

Me too rolleyes
Driveshaft decided to eat itself in Germany. None available in Europe so was stuck for 2 days while a spare was sent over.
Managed to get there Saturday night and had to head back on Sunday afternoon after the dinner as I had to catch the ferry from Amsterdam on Monday.
Good blast back though laugh

I'm very much supporting this philosophy laugh

Brian, we may even have a choice of Rosyth-Zeebrugge by then, that reduces the European driving leg by about 100km/1 hr but seem to remember it was an expensive fare back in the day. Atm Hull-Rotterdam is cheaper than NCL-IJmuiden and 100km less driving over there as well though more in the UK.

Early days yet but do folk have their favoured accommodation points en route in Europe?

I'm aware of showing an unhealthy increasing interest in this trip laugh

Simon, I read this Rosyth-Zeebrugge chat online back in 2017 or 2018 but then an article came up just a couple of weeks ago. It would save on a little bit of driving for us this side but I expect it will inevitably come down to the cost difference Rosyth and Newcastle. The cost of our trips from Newcastle to IJmuiden haven't really changed much but the expensive part for us was pet friendly cabins which almost doubles. I don't expect we will be bringing dogs for 2024.

Going from Zeebrugge to Turin does change the route to take make use of French roads and approx 2 hours/ 50 miles shorter but perhaps with French toll costs I'm not sure of extra cost. I've no experience of the roads through France as its predominantly been Germany in to Austria or Switzerland but it may very well be worth looking at it as an option if its up and running before then.

We've certainly found some great places to stay along the routes we have taken and split the journey in up into 2 night stop and both in Germany. Id probably say May 2022 trips had our best finds yet.

How much of your journeys have been on toll roads Brian or do you tend to avoid them?

At the beginning of the trips we took the decision to not go via France because of the tolls and that's remained for the others however its always up for consideration. I think Rob might be the person to speak to for his opinion of both French or German routes.

There's no tolls in Germany, Austria has tolls, Switzerland you need a vignette at 40 euro which covers you unless you use some tunnels, Italy has tolls throughout but with the route to Turin I think we would only encounter 1 toll. From leaving Turin to Switzerland via Aosta valley there is 1 toll.

French motorways are generally first class with max speed limit of 83mph in fine weather.

There are regular stopping off areas, either for a wee and a rest, or larger ones for meals, fuel and a proper break.

They do have a cost, but you can cover long distances very easily.

I found French motorways the easiest way to go if you don’t have a great deal of time for your overall trip. Stopped at Metz when going to Rome via Switzerland, and Dijon is a great overnight stop before crossing into Italy when headed for Turin. With an Emovis tag in your windscreen you dont even need to stop at the toll plazas.

Pete, Does the Emovis tag cover France only?

I think when we looked at the italian Telepass it worked out very expensive and so just cheaper just paying at the tolls.
