Brian, what would you estimate the extra cost of tolls to be?

Would that cost be offset by shorter journey time/fuel savings?

At a steady 80mph I was was getting a range of 450 miles per tank which I think is damn good and certainly a pretty heavy laden coupe.

Cant really comment on costs of French tolls. Going via Germany and Switzerland is 52 miles shorter. but see belows Via Michelin app calculator.

Simon, for or us travelling by ferry from Newcastle

Ijmuiden to Turin via Germany and Switzerland 734 miles approx 11 hrs 52 mins

Ijmuiden to Turin via Belgium and France 786 miles approx 11 hrs 56 mins

52 miles shorter via Germany and toll free, 40 euro swiss vignette, and then 30 euro approx tolls from Switzerland into Italy and so I expect this is still the cheaper route.

Have a look at this great app it breaks down the lot for you. The Via Michelin allows you to enter a route, car, fuel cost etc

Cheapest route will be through Germany & Switzerland, but it is often quite busy and not overly entertaining.

We have travelled down that way quite a few times. I would choose a route to get you down to the interesting areas swiftly. The French tolls are expensive but are mostly rather quiet, especially if you avoid the A6 & Lyon. Once in the south take an overnight. The following day leave the auto-routes and pick an interesting D Route across the Alps and on into Turin.

The D1006 was a nice route over, plenty of Forts to explore on the border. The N94 Briancon - Sestriere was also a nice route over to Turin.

My inclination is to take a shorter route and arrive at destination earlier on this occasion, if I were "on holiday" I'd rather take a mixture of scenic/motorway route.

Autobahns will certainly eat up the mileage however will increase fuel consumption but happy to take Brian's recommendation having done the trip several times.

I'll probably go the same route as 2019, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland through the tunnel to Italy, as Bob says Germany driving is quite dull mile after mile zzz

Sounds an interesting route Joe. Would that tunnel be Great St Bernard Tunnel?

Id agree with you about the mile after mile of roads in Germany wether Autobahn or not. What breaks it up for us is setting off from our hotel and driving halfway, stop somewhere scenic and spend an hour, have a coffee and cake, then do the other half to the next hotel.

Our first trip we stopped only once... I thought the quickest way was the best way to Italy but in doing so that ment missing out in some spectacular places in Germany, Switzerland.

The following years we've opted for 2 stops before reaching Italy. Ofcourse if time off is limited then we have to do more miles per day.

I think we are very likely going to treat the trip to Turin 2024 as our holiday. Spending maybe 10 days around the north of Italy.

We'll be doing it in two stages of course: first bringing the Coupe to Potsdam so it can stay on the continent a couple of months and get a sun tan, and then Potsdam down to Italy - which is of course quite a lot further than e.g. London-Turin. We'd probably risk the A9 and stop somewhere around Munich, since thirteen hours in a coupe isn't good for my back any more.

Neil we found a great hotel to atay Aschbacher Hof in Feldkirchen-Westerham just south of Munich and not far off the beaten track. We will definitely stop again if a route would take us.

Joe, I think I seen MtBlanc signs after last tolls from leaving Turin just before going right to Bernardo pass but perhaps we should have gone Mont Blanc for France stop. Not knowing the huge delays at Bernardo. Id also look a around Geneva as another stopover.

I would think the Mont Blanc route is ideal - one stop in France somewhere south of Dijon, & you can easily make Turin the next day. Or add a stop in Aosta which is lovely, then it's a nice short hop to Turin.

I think Gorgio from the Italian owners club is responsible for the event organisation in Turin but various country clubs will be making their own arrangements to get down there. Is there a Fiat Coupe owners club in Slovenia?

Out of interest in the past did many of the UK coopsters rendezvous at some point in Europe then convoy to Turin or did folk tend to make their own way?

This time it looks like we'll have at least 2 embarkation points from Blighty, Dover and Newcastle.

Oh and the chunnel probably...

It would be great to have a convoy to Turin, how that would work for the UK coopsters I dont know but it would be great to do it. It's likely to be split in to 2, a group arriving in France and Netherlands.

Simon, Im still doubtful the Rosyth-Zeebrugge will be up in running by 2024. Im reading the freight will be running as early as 2023 with passenger crossings to follow in 2024.

Its early to say ofcourse, but my preferred route Newcastle-Ijmuiden and meeting up with anyone in the Netherlands or Germany.

From Ijmuiden, the shortest route at 730 miles and which could do in 2 stops in Germany and arrive in Turin on day 3. That's 4 hours @ 240 miles drive each day and so its not hard pushed.
