Hi, has anyone ported the turbo housing before. This friday i am going to take my manifold off, get my broken stud removed and heli coiled. Then going to port my manifold, but when i took my turbo off last i noticed there was a black edges where the exhaust gases was hitting, would it be ok to remove abit of these, or leave well alone. Not sure if it will help spoolup or anything.
I don't want to go too far, but if someone said they did it and made a difference then i will take abit off.

All help is greatly appreciated

Ash

You can port match the manifold to the turbo. This will improve flow and spool up. Make sure you removed the housing from the turbo first.

I did this when I ported the manifold. You can remove a 3-4mm step on the turbo housing, it can only help! Mine spools noticeably earlier now smile

What are you porting with? I strongly recommend tungsten carbide bits if you can get them cool

Will post some pics up a bit later...

Webbo did you remove the turbo exhaust housing when you did yours,as i don't want to disturb the turbo housing. I am going to take the manifold off to port it.

I have ordered a tungsten carbide bit so should do it well hopefully.
if you can get pics for me mate that would be fantastic.

You cant port it with the housing still on the turbo. All the metal you remove will fall into the turbo.

Yeh thats what i am worried about if all the bits get stuck somewhere, i was thinking of sticking a rag down my turbo and put a magnet there to pick up all the bits. Then after spray lots of brake cleaner down to wash it away.

I'd still suggest you take the housing off. It's not a big deal taking the housing off, the internals are the critical bit as that's obviously all balanced up. The housings just bolt on around that.

I will see how easy it wants to come off when i get down to it. I am going to leave the turbo where it is, taken it off so many times smile would be nice to leave it on.

Hi ash. I took the turbo off and stuck it in a vice to remove the exhaust housing because I had the same concerns. Unfortunately no matter how hard I tried I couldn't separate the exhaust housing from the core because it was locked solid and if I tried any harder I would have broken something. So in the end I did what you did and put a rag in the core then used an industrial hoover and blower to make sure it was clear of debris.

Not sure I would do it on the car though, the bits fly everywhere and I wouldn't want them flying around the engine bay. Once you get to the turbo it's only the oil and water feed and return pipes plus the V-band and support bracket to remove so another 30mins to do the job safely.
