I did this when I ported the manifold. You can remove a 3-4mm step on the turbo housing, it can only help! Mine spools noticeably earlier now What are you porting with? I strongly recommend tungsten carbide bits if you can get them Will post some pics up a bit later...

You cant port it with the housing still on the turbo. All the metal you remove will fall into the turbo.

I'd still suggest you take the housing off. It's not a big deal taking the housing off, the internals are the critical bit as that's obviously all balanced up. The housings just bolt on around that.

I will see how easy it wants to come off when i get down to it. I am going to leave the turbo where it is, taken it off so many times would be nice to leave it on. Ash

Hi ash. I took the turbo off and stuck it in a vice to remove the exhaust housing because I had the same concerns. Unfortunately no matter how hard I tried I couldn't separate the exhaust housing from the core because it was locked solid and if I tried any harder I would have broken something. So in the end I did what you did and put a rag in the core then used an industrial hoover and blower to make sure it was clear of debris.
Not sure I would do it on the car though, the bits fly everywhere and I wouldn't want them flying around the engine bay. Once you get to the turbo it's only the oil and water feed and return pipes plus the V-band and support bracket to remove so another 30mins to do the job safely.
