I am having a custom tubular manifold made up locally with external gate

I have a chioce of 316G Stainless schedule 10 pipe (2.7mm wall) or mild steel pipe schedule 40 (4.5mm wall)

I am leaning towards the SS as it looks better, is lighter (6kg instead of 8kg for the manifold approx), and is corrsion resistant so does need to be coated

However I know SS is more prone to cracking over time, anyone had experience with these materials in turbo manifolds

Given I do about 4k miles a year tops (ie not a daily driver) what would you go for?

Cheers

Can you make a manifold locally cheaper than you can buy/ship from Europe? There's a chap on the Evo Forum who has made a batch of manifold sat something like £350, is that not a more viable option?

If nothing else, get in touch with him and see what he had his manifolds made out of, don't think they were as thick as 4.5mm, but sure I read they were still thick enough to have lambda boss welded in if required

316 is better than 304 and has better anti corrosion properties, it's not as good as 321 which is the best and most ductile for the job.
Leave steam pipe on the shelf, easy to work with, but too heavy and rusts (a flake from the inside of that will do wonders for a turbo blade spinning at 150000 rpm)

Inconel is the one really.

His ones don't have external wastegates flanges, and are smaller tube than I want - I believe his are 316 but mandrel bent with a 38mm OD and 32mmID according to his ebay add - ebay add below

The Supersprint by way of comparsion is a 38mm internal.

gralecoupe, as long as the weight is bracketed it won't be a problem though will it

I found a good article on Honda-tech saying 321 is the one if you have numerous welds, as mine will, and 3mm thickness or it could well crack. Since this isnt an option for me steam pipe is looking like the goer

Inconel is hugely expensive I believe, like sell a kidney expensive

I will get it coated but not sure about the inside surfaces, surely it won't rust to the point of flaking that quick

Paul,
I was discussing with a friend today and he insists that Supersprint is 38 EXTERNAL DIA (not internal as I told you)
Problem is that I can only check on Monday when I'm back to Greece, unless Nick_D can measure his and post. However many ppl here don't regard Supersprint highly as they say it cracks (too thin wall on the tubing)

Never thought what gralecoupe says about flaking of the tubing but this scared me!

V.

Yes it's true it will flake from the inside. You can coat the inside though - it needs to be properly sandblasted all the way through to give the key
There's no point in making one from scratch if the guy makes them and you like the design - just ask him for a different ID and a wastegate take-off.

John - heaps of websites I've been to promote the use of weldels which is what it will be made from, so surely it's not that much of an issue? or people wouldn't reccommend them?

Vas - can you check, someone else (maybe begbie?) told me it was38 External so you friend could be right

Nick - d, can you measure the pipe diameter on yours just for interest stake

Cheers
