More horsepower in the VIS, but I have a feeling that Rog or carlt once said that the VIS could be less reliable but no idea why confused

Oh and much much nicer standard wheels on the late cars love

Danielthemanual has a lovely yellow one smile

Not that rare, owners don't seem to post often - perhaps a good sign idea

I think i'm right in saying that the difference is the intake. That Vis stands for something like Variable Intake System.

Basically at lower speeds the vis system reduces the intake to allow faster movement of air through it. At greater speeds it opens up to prevent restriction.

A stock 20v has a more compromised intake to attempt to do both these scenarios.

It also uses a different ECU, and it's fly-by-wire rather than using a throttle cable.

It's the other way round bridges, on higher revs the air intake path is channeled or piped directly to each port, this valve system at lower revs opens so that the air intake is feed like a standard design plenum.

I'll post some pictures of the internals and action this action later.

My wifes VIS is really different from the alloy top n/a's, the engine sounds nosier because of the plastic rocker cover, and because of the fly by wire system it revs quicker and loves running at high revs.

As for reliability, it's like anything else, works really well if you service it regually, cleaning the throttle body helps with the revs dropping issue you get when your sitting at the lights.

But!
If you have a problem with the VIS system it can cost upto £500 for a second hand throttle body replacement on its own!

Generally the VIS is a great reliable coupe that's far cheaper to run then a 20vt. laugh

I'd agree with this, 5 years of trouble free running until recently and now 4 months of it sitting in the garage unable to nail down the problem and chasing my tail!!

4yrs and trouble free in my 20V VIS. Had to ditch those tiny 15" wheels though.

I upgraded her car to the 16vt wheels whan I converted it brembo calipers love

I think the VIS is a very under-rated car IMO.

Just a quick update on this thread with some pictures.

These show the plenum split into two parts to show the internals, the base is closest the camera and contains the VIS mechanism.

This picture shows the position when the car is idling and up to 2.5k rpm.

Above 2.5k rpm the VIS rotates so that it feeds each intake port individually, picture here.

I hope you can see what I mean, and understand it's action.

I've driven both model n/a coupes and feel a definite difference with the VIS system, in a way it's like having a power band, not much of one but it's noticable.

Joe

I have a VIS, nothing wrong mechanically, bought with nsh and one trip to motormech and was perfect again. Just spend 5 months sat still and after a quick battery charge went straight through MOT.

Just a quick, but non-expert opinion.....

I had a 20V Vis engine, which was very sluggish and had lots of 'flat spots' of zero acceleration above 4k. Due to some complex factors I won't go into now, I blew the old engine up. In all honesty, I think it had problems when I got it, but since it was my first coop, I didn't know what I was looking for. I know better now.

Now I have a replacement 20V Vis engine, which has been much better looked after, and goes up to the red without any flat spots, and I can honestly say it's a fantastic engine. If only I'd driven one as good as this when I test drove the old one ! Now, it's fantastic. (Accelerates beautifully, and holds 2.5 bar of pressure idling, and hasn't lost a drop of oil in the 2 months since the last service)

I never owned a Non-Vis, so I can't compare, but I would say look after it, and it will be as good as any other, if not better.

Morgan.
