hey, i've just sold my gt3076r-wg and was thinking of going for the same turbo but externaly wastegated. I was just wondering is there any other turbo out there that could offer me a quicker spool up and produce around the same power or is this turbo my only choice? cheers

Fast spool and 500bhp don't go together do they?? laugh Are you still on 2litre or 2.4?

If I was you I would get some drives in some cars to help you decide, as Flea seemed happier wih his setup on a smaller turbo. Its not all about bhp figures at the end of the day!

In 2 litre and 500bhp you will have lag no matter what turbo you use I'm afraid nick, larger capacity is the only real solution to that problem, you should have a go in squids car, it's a very good balance

Nick I have always said that turbo is too big but if you really want to chase it then you need supporting mods. I still think to run that turbo you need to go 2.4 or go mad on every mod possible to the 2.0. You know JohnS is selling all the 2.4 bits so if you sell your pistons and rods you can go 2.4 wink and then that turbo sounds tasty tongue

Another one to look at is the Borg Warner S258, or larger 3 series, they spool about 300-500rpm slower than a gt3076R but support more top end power, due to bigger wheels, they are GT series type money, and I believe have a more forgiving graph than a gt3582R. Someone on the board (maybe from Brazil on a Marea) make silly power with a borg warner, over 500bhp anyway, maybe you can find them and have a chat

I have never run one but research them a fair bit when I was looking around

On the down side they are large and very heavy.

Have a look at this link -this is the smaller s256, but they might be worth looking at - ie researching

im definatley not going for gt3071r i know im being silly but realy i wanna try something different. i know flee has the gt3076r-wg but dont forget his is internal wastegate and i will be running substatial head work and tubular manifold with t3 flange (if i buy that turbo) i was just wondering if theres a turbo that spools quicker with the same ability. i've decided i want to aim for 500bhp but trying to get the best setup. i wonder if johns would just sell me his engine. but im guessing he would want quite a bit for it. Also i might have to pm beggie because his is a 2.0 16v with the gt3076r aint it?

I run a modified GT3076R 0.64 which has a slightly bigger turbine wheel. As Mark has said, fast spool and 500bhp don't go together with a 2 litre engine. Taz runs the same turbo (albeit smaller turbine) on his 2.4 and it spools up like a GT28R, fantastic power delivery.

Going to an external wastegate isn't going to help too much either unless you have issues with boost creep and want to flow a little more at the top end. I think begbie has the same turbo but T3 with an external wastegate and it doesn't look like it's coming in any earlier than mine. While my car is lovely to drive off boost, it's not very streetable at the minute as the boost comes in way too late. While it could make 500bhp, I can't currently run more than 1.9bar without it missing, so a CDI system is required. I also don't know whether I would want to run more boost because the head bolts are untested at this level, the gearboxes start to become an issue and despite having a 7850rpm limiter, it could do with another 500rpms but I can't say whether the valve springs are good for this rpm.

If you are thinking about running this car on the road then you will have to accept that power is going to be very much at the top end which can in real terms make it a bit slower. Of course with a big budget there are many things you could do to help the cause...

ok firstly nobody said i wanted fast spool and 500bhp i wanted to know if there was a faster spooling turbo than the gt3076r that have the same ability.

Flea at what rpm do you see positive boost and then full boost?

If i do go for a gt3071r then i wouldnt even bother with headwork realy, id just forge the bottom end and stick with that.

I have pmed John about his bits but i think that will be a very expensive option for me to be honest. but well see what he says.

flea i might sound s****d here but whats a CDI system? cheers

I'm a good 600-700rpms behind a GT3071R. In 4th gear 1bar is 3950rpm and 1.85bar is 4700rpm. As you can imagine 1st and 2nd gear are even later hence why I struggled with the short sprint circuit at TOTB. Even between gear changes the lag is noticeable, it's hard work trying to keep it on the boil.

A CDI system (capacitive discharge ignition) will allow the coils to give a much stronger/multiple spark so that at high boost i.e. 2bar+, especially at peak cylinder pressures, it doesn't get blown out. It's not needed normally but on a turbo that big it will make more power at the high boost, but you need to rev like a Skyline i.e. 8500-10,000rpms!

oddly enuf on my 2.4 with the GT3076 but with a 0.64 turbine housing, I have no probs keeping it on the boil, in fact on the last r/road session with flea my coop was acutally strangling itself, just wouldn't make any more power, even with higher boost settings, as it just missed.

I've now fitted a 0.86 housing to the turbine, so it'll be intersting to see how much different the engine responds to this, noting that I may see more lag ( hopefully not noticeable )

can't always have it both ways I'm afraid smile

If I can get a comfy 400+hp, I'll leave it at that, as I REALLY don't want to be swapping 'boxes on a regular basis crazy

Thanks for all the advice guys but me being me im going for gt3076r.64 external wastegate. Should be interesting to see the difference in power delivery between mine, flea's and beggies cars as they will be pretty similar but ill be running a smaller turbine housing.

I'd really like to see a coupe with a VNT or similar type turbo.

Surely this is a viable way of creating a good power coupe with low lag?

no one has managed to get it to work in a petrol application apart from Porsche, many have tried and failed

Also, laying that sort of power down on the road will be a problem. I would like to see how many enthusiastic launches you get per gearbox.

Personally, I would not want a larger turbo then my current GT2871 with a .86 housing. I'm really pleased with the response on mine. If I was doing another rebuild now, the only thing I might consider doing differently is going for a 2.4. But it is all a question of money, and how much you want to spend.

Jason told me that you are getting a tubular manifold with an external wastegate, so I am sure you will be extremely pleased with the results when it is finished.

Actually, a NOS system would probably be the best way of getting big power and relatively little lag....
