I've been thinking about this for a while, so as it says above really, what sort of money am I looking at to get it sorted and who could do it? I'm not an engine man, doing this myself would be too much.
I don't want huge power, just looking for reliable, low stress power using as much standard stuff as possible.
Any comments welcome.

The mods are retricted to bolt-on goodies (turbo, intercooler, filter & intake, injectors, exhaust and of course, some live mapping). All of this can be done for a couple of grand or so. a 2.4 would be better, of this there is no doubt. It would spool earlier, probably give more torque and would definitely be better off-boost. However, it will cost five times as much. If your definition of "huge power" is 500+, then a 2.4 is a good way of going about it. Anything less than 400 bhp as your target means staying with a 2.0 unless you have an irrational need to empty a bank account.

Thats the bit I like Nigel!
I can't understand why this would cost so much but I'll trust the judgement of you guys of course.
I colleague of mine had a fully rebuilt V6 shoe horned into his MR2, along with a supercharger and associated mods for £5000, all work carried out by a respected Toyota specialist, which is why I'm a little shocked at the prices suggested!
The idea behind my thinking was to achieve a modest power increase, but a more significant torque increase, but using a standard turbo on standardish boost, hopefully giving me a less stressed engine and better day to day drivability.
Never mind, sounds like a no go to me.

I can't understand why you'd think it would be so cheap.

my advice is stay well clear of the 2.4 unless you want to customise a lot of other things... clutch, cooling system ( oil & water ), exhaust, ECU, fuelling system, suspension ( odd to say that, but 400+ hp is no good on stock crap ), intercooler, gearbox, brakes, brakes, brakes, did I say brakes ! I only took the plunge cos my old engine spun a shell, else I wouldn't have bothered. True, off boost performance is better, but you have to spend a lot for this benefit. Cost versus returns

Check this thread by JohnS as it gives a little bit of insight on the 2.4 conversion costs. I've thought about the 2.4 conversion route before proceeding with my plan (3 years back) and I would say that the engine by itself would cost around £6,000. As for who can, I'm sure others will comment on here. I know that Barbz can still do it but he is in UAE now. I also say that you should go for the 2.4 conversion if you are ready for it. Good luck mate

That's stupidly cheap!

I would build one but it isn't my day job. If you just want more torque and better driveability you could go with a standard head that will massively cut down the overall cost.

I could build the engine but not do the rest of the conversion. It has been done in a stilo abarth already I believe. Problem is the engine has to come out because unless it is very low mileage there is ovality in the top of thebores
